338 Hornady 250 grain RN. I have a good load for my 338 Hawk - about 2600 fps. Wondering how the bullet works on deer size game. Anyone have experience with this bullet on deer?

Thanks

It well kill every deer you hit well with it. As with most horday cup and core bullet they seem to be a bit on the spot side well work great for deer.

Well that's certainly going out on a limb. That statement is true for pretty much any centerfire ever produced.

ok - a little more information. My concern is - will the bullet expand on game this size at 2300 fps. IE. Is this bullet to tough for my application.

Well, we're gunna find out soon. That's the bullet I plan on using in my .338-06 AI. With my limited experience with this bullet in the .338 mag, it should work just fine. Soft enough for good expansion, and heavy enough to drive thru for a nice exit hole at any angle.
Good shootin'

I'm interested in your results as well with the 250gr RN. My 338-06 (non AI) should be ready in a week or so and I'm thinking of different bullets to play with and see how it shoots them.

A loaded down 225 soft point would be a bit more desirable for deer then your dangerous game load, however yours will kill deer also.

Well guys no Bear to get my results from, but so far I am going to have to say the 250s are too hard for .338-06 velocities. No expansion what so ever in our clay bank at 325 yards. You could actually reload and shoot the bullet again!
Same bank with the 225 gr. SSTs opens them up completely down to the shank.
The 250s may work on deer up close, but I would use the 225s.
Most all bullets in .338 today are made for WM velocities.
Cheers

well my first experience with it in my .338-06 was this fall...shot a 4yr bull moose in the neck. Distance was no more than 50yds, dead on impact, of course I hit the neck bone. I weighed the bullet after and if I am not mistaken it weighed in at something like 160 grains? It is not your "average" lil' deer but nonetheless.....a deer.

Bill Soverns did my stock work..on a copier. Jim Dubell rebored the aught six to the .338-06 and done other metal work. BBL--20" to bolt face, Timney trigger, Lyman 48 rear app, NECG Univ. front w/wh.bead, fully bedded. Fed GM210's, H414>56.5GRN, Horn 250gr. RN/.338 dia.>2482fps avg...this is a nice Rem. Model 30 that is one of my favorite rifles. I've another .338-06 on a Model 70, PacNor bbl/super match 22" that shoots clover leafs at 100yds. with 215 Sierras.

grizz,

what is your overall opinion of the round? suitable for alaska's wilds and, by extension, the Lower 48?

my opine? ha that is a good one..Smiler well I don't use the other .338 win mags anymore, gave them to my boys. I believe it to be a fine meat gun liken to the 9.3x62 I've got...I don't use it for long range as some would. I like a short gun..it is just handy. I've a few scoped rifles but the need is not great at all for use.

The .338-06 is "perfect" for my use here in the Brooks and suspect it to be so "anywhere's".

I hunted Alaska for two decades with both the .338 WM and the .338-06. I could see no difference between them in the field on deer, caribou, black bear or moose. I used the 210 Nosler Partition almost exclusively, perfect record.

Since moving to Texas I use both rifles, loaded down for the little deer and hogs here. 200 Hornady SPs work great at 2350 fps just as they do in the .338 JDJ handgun at the same velocity. The 225 is almost as soft but isn't driven as fast, so the 200 gets the nod. The 250s are certainly way too tough for deer at "low" velocities.
