I just won a 700 BDL on a $5 raffle ticket. I don't need it with the other calibers that I have, but am thinking about scoping it for a specialty long-range gun. Also, not sure what I would shoot at long range. If I keep it, what scope and power setting would you suggest e.g. 3 X 9, 4.5 X 14, etc. | ||

I have a weaver grand slam 4.5X14 on mine and I really like it. clear, bright, positive adjustments and good eye relief. Retumbo and Barnes' 180gr tripple shocks or Nosler 200gr accubonds are what I'm running in my Remmy. | |||

I have a Leupold 4.5x14 LR (30mm tube and side focus) with the B&C reticle on my Win. 70 300 Ultra-Mag. I have not shot it yet though but will also try the 180 xxxshocks. | |||

For strictly long range I would want at least 14x on the top end., I would not want more that 6x on the small end. I prefer a Ballistic Cam, and use a Leupold 3.5-10, MKIV, M3, on my 300 Win Mag. So I give up a little magnification, bit I prefer the quick adjustment to long range without "counting clicks". DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY | |||

Given how common hardly fired 300 RUMs are on the used rack maybe you should shoot it with a spare scope you already own before you put a lot of money into your $5 BDL.  | |||

No question on doubt - I would put a Swarovski Z6i 3-18x50 with Ballitic Turrent on top of such a caliber - not cheap, but the very best stuff You could buy - and You have up to 18x power to reach out and 3x power if anything should come too close... http://www.titanium-gunworks.c...e/z6i-3-18x50-p.html  | |||

On my 300 ultra mag I have a Burres 4X16 it's good out to 600 yds. The scope isn't cheap it is the signature model. | |||

How far are you willing to shoot game? Why buy more scope that that? I tried all the various different ideas over the last 25 years and realized I just wasn't into shooting big game much past 300 yds and rarely then. I decided to settle on top resolution scopes with as few knobs and dials as possible. KISS principle. As long as I can crank it up high enough to see holes at the range I'm happy. Otherwise they stay on 3-5 power pending conditions. But if you're into long range hunting, more power (pardon the pun) to you! If you have the bucks and want clear high power, look no farther than a March. They have a 10x zoom so you get variables like 1-10, 2.5-25. The tacticals are 6x; 5-32, 10-60. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson. | |||

I have a 4.5-14 Leica on my 30/404 - which is almost identical to the 300 Ultra. And I have only used that rifle on one hunt in South Africa, shooting anilams from 10 to almost 500 yards away. Worked perfectly. | |||

Hey Camdog, I do not have a 300RUM, but have been very impressed by the accuracy of maybe 25 different ones I've seen at the Range. All had a factory Muzzle Break and all of those were using Factory Ammo. The most drametic comment was one guy said his 243Win had more Recoil, however I'll say I watched him shoot and he was exagerating a bit. More like a 30-06 with 180gr Factory Ammo. So, don't be afraid of the rifle, they will surprise you. You mentioned "scoping it for a specialty long-range gun. Also, not sure what I would shoot at long range." But you did not mention what you consider "long-range" happens to be. What distance are you talking about? This is the same question I see that tigertate asked and did not get a response. Perhaps Camdog is not aware the thread got moved - as if it mattered that it was on Big Bores. ----- Haven't seen any on the Used Gun Racks in the Carolinas or in Kentucky. Why would you and Bear believe you all are seeing so many of them? Noise? | |||

There have been times I visited Cabelas and Gander Mountain in MN and ND when it seemed like every every other used M700 was a RUM. I imagine they become lightly used due to a combination of recoil and muzzle blast, especially for the fella who thinks he can solve his problem with technology but then leaves his electronic hearing protectors at home when he goes hunting. Just a guess. | |||

My hunting partner has a Nightforce 3.5x15x50 on top of his. It is loaded using the 185gr Berger's and the drops with the rifle zeroed at 250yds will line up on the laser etched marks on the reticle, within 2" up or down, all the way out to past 1K with his load. So far we have not found a reason to go with the bigger heavier bullets. From all of the testing we have done with his, the 185's have proven to be just as flat and hit just as hard out to the 1175 target we did our final drops at. He has shot several groups under 9" to that range with his. It does have a Defensive Edge brake on it and he shoots a healthy dose of H-1000 using Remington cases and Federal 215 GMM primers. If you decide on or can afford the Nightforce, I would go with the NP-R2 reticle and go for the 3.5x15. IT will carry all the power and clarity you will need to get out to 1K and even beyond if needed for target and hunting. I have one of the 5.5x22x50's and using the same reticle I rarely use much more than 18 power due to mirage in the area we hunt and shoot longer range. Mike / Tx | |||

I have a Swaro 4-16x50PH with the TDS reticle on my Sako 75 300 RUM. The TDS really helped with the pretty long shot on this elk:  The rifle and scope certainly aren't lightweights but it sure was a heck of a lot easier carrying the RIFLE UP the HILL than the ELK DOWN the HILL  ................................DJ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!.................. | |||

My 300 RUM is topped by a 4.5-14X50 Leupold VXIII with the 30mm tube and B&C reticle. Whatever you choose make sure your bases and rings are up to the task.....recoil can be sharp and the bigger the scope the more strain on mounts. My friend's 300 RUM broke a set of standard Leupold mounts--when replaced with the Dual Dovetail ones it has been fine. Cheers, Dan | |||

My 300Rum also wears a 4.5X14 X50 leupold in Warne rings and bases but with 8X40 screws. With 180 gr Noslers I've shot game out to 400yrds.
