Is the 7x57 even worth a mention anymore. Does any one really use this antiquated POS? Any bleeding hearts out there? With the power positive 7-08 what purpose can this grandady offer or add to what the great 7-08 has given us? roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Not worth a poop...damn things don't shoot accurate and can't kill anything more than ten yards away. I wouldn't have more than three or four of the damn things..... As a matter of fact, they are so bad that they are just barely better than a .338 Federal! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The 7x57 is no better then the .275 rigby, or the garbage 7mm mauser! They are all complete pieces of junk, and not worth nothin! Many of them have been known to explode the rifle's because of the cartridges unexceptable shoulder angle! If you are unfortunate enough to have a rifle so chambered, do not dispare, as I would be willing to help you out. In fact in doing my part to rid the world of this worthless caliber, I will supply my address to anyone that has one of these worthless rifles so chambered, (perticularly if chambered in an old worthless Mauser action), so they can be shipped to me for immediate and proper disposal. I will take care of all disposal and shipping fees.

Nope not worth a crap. After 7 or 8 years of using one one of these days my wife's is going to fail to take her animal on the first shot. When that happens there will be one serious in this household. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

The only reason I have one now is because CZ quit importing them, and I figured I should get one since they would be scarce. Of course the one I had previously was because the Ruger I had in 7x57 wasn't very accurate, so I just had to replace it with a small ring Mauser. Another thing is that it's boreing. It has too little recoil to really get my attention, and the challange of load development is - well, not really a challange. We all know how dissappointing that can be. Might as well use factory ammo. Also, I don't get much practice in tracking wounded game when I use it either. It burns so little powder that a pound or two last until I worry about it going stale. Nonetheless, I suppose a guy ought to have just one, at least. Just for nostalgia sake. I've wasted enough time and money on 7X57s to know to stay away from them. I've been trying to sell this one for $275 but I can't find a buyer... ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

While the old 7X57 is talked up on the forum its not found much elsewhere. On Winchesters site there is only one load the 145 gr Power Point. Yet for the 7-08 they have two loads for the Remington cartridge. The 7X57 is too long for short actions and too short for long actions.

Worthless, just like the 8x57s, 6.5x55s, and the rest of the Euro Trash rounds.

The wife said she hated to hear you had to deal with that sorry rifle. Said she would be willing to ease your pain. Since she already had to deal with one a second wouldn't hurt that much more. Seriously that has always been one of my favorite 7x57s. As to being to short for a long action I simply seat the bullet to the base of the neck an use the majority of the mag box. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

You guys convinced me. Who would you recommend to shorten an original .275 Rigby type A-Mauser by cutting and re-welding? I want to have the barrel set back and chamber for 7mm WSSM. I know it won't fit the stock anymore but I've got a nice Ramline to put it into. .

Utterly worthless. One of these days whitetail deer are going to break down and read how anemic the 7X57 is and stop falling down and dying as soon as they are hit with a bullet from one.

I own an original POS Rigby Mauser in 275 Rigby. Shoots the Winchester 145PP @ 2650fps and groups them into 1 MOA. Everything shot with it so far has simply folded to the shot. I have been avoiding reloading because of the great performance of the basic factory ammo. Must get rid of it and replace with a WSM of some type. Can anyone help?

Just came back from Africa after shooting 8 head of game in 10 shots, 7 fell to 1 shot and dwon, one required 3 shots but if left alone for another minute it to would have expired to the first shot. But since it didn't its time to throw it in the river and buy a magnum something. Still a class act by any standard - best medium caliber ever for soft medium sized game - recoil is low and excellent bullet performance without mincing the meat up. Its heavy-for-caliber 175 gr bullet at 2,300 fps creates pure magic. Experienced it this way with a controlled expansion bullet, like a Swift A-Frame, and you will love it. Warrior

They'll do fine for someone wanting a cheap milsup rifle that he can bubba-ize without worrying about messing up a good rifle. They're best with express sights since they won't shoot far enough to need a scope. Show one to an elephant and the idea that such a puny weapon would be considered adequete for killing him that he will laugh himself to death. I understand that Gander Mtn will allow you $7 toward the purchase of a M700 in 7-08. How long that sweet of a deal will be available, I don't know. Aim for the exit hole

The answer is obvious - 7x57 is fine. But so are many others. Is the 7x57 kind of odd ball length better suited to a 30-06 length action? Would the gun industry been better to adopt as standard action, one sized for the 375H&H length. And a medium set to handle the 7x57 length? Or would that have been un-American? Can you buy a 7x57 in a super light carbine as offered by several makers in 7mm08?

That is one sweet looking little rifle! Too bad it's chambered in that POS cartridge. OK, I'll go ahead and give you the $275, nah, make that $150, but only so I can dispose of it proper.

As you say the 7X57 is 'fine'. So are many other cartridges. A rifle guy should shoot what he wants. To each his own. The 30-06 Springfield is far more popular and has a world famous history as it won WW1, WW2 and Korea! The 308 is better for smaller rifles. The 7-57 was chambered in the Brno 21f and 22h's. These are neat rifles even if they are long actions as they are small ring and so precious. Some were made with carbine barrels at 20.5" They are not heavy nor are they wide at the balance point. Nice guns to carry. I may take a 21h hunting this weekend. I had a M70 type safety put on it. There is nice one for sale in Goshen, CT. A full stock. Ok, its not cheap but its fine......

If'n you have to ask....... It truly is one of the top ten cartridges. It comes down to personal preference and intended uses.

Well, I asked that poorly. I was attempting to make an example off how the shelf options are limited. Like Rem M7 or Ruger Compact. I know for enough $$$ you can get anything, and in that case might as well get something with some class. I wish the 7x57 was up there with 30-06 and 375H&H. I dont see 7x57 as a top 10 in USA. Now the great 250 Sav is down for the count. I think interest in 30/30 is way off from years past. Turning the M94 into a $$$ limited production maybe the last straw on the 30/30 camel's back. The 30/30 is great contender pistol too, but not quite a wizz bang as some other modern improvements. No comments on the length of the 7x57? Does not quite fit?

Good god! thank heavens you chaps are here and I can now see the light! 'bout time I threw my POS 7x57 in the bin, shooting like this (4 shot group) and downing such measly game with one shot at 170yrds is unacceptable Glad I've seen the light, I knew there was a reason I am a member here! Now, which 7mmMagnumwhatchamacallit shall I chamber it for?? Finman better have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it....

Would I be foolish to take a perfectly good Browning LH A-bolt Stalker in 30/06 and have it re-barreled to 7x57? I have a 7mm-08 as my 7x57 wannabe rifle but I would really like a 7mm Mauser.

I think that the old cartridge should be in an old gun or at least a new gun built the old fashioned way. Realistically speaking it is not to much and it is not to little. There are better cartridges and there are lessor cartridges but the 7x57 is right in the middle with a long history of exploits to back it up. Captain Finlander

I really hate the 7x57. It's boring, everything I shoot just falls down. Where's the fun of tracking in thick under brush until O' dark thirty? The thrill of gutting and dragging your game out after mid-night in freezing rain, because you couldn't follow the blood trail in the dark with a weak flashlight? The 7x57 Sucks! Especially this one, cause it won't shoot over an inch at 100yds. What's the point of shooting something in the same hole again, when it wouldn't die the first time!(OH...never mind...it did.) Thinkin' about just jammin' it muzzle first in the mud out by the road, with a "FREE" sign on it.(as soon as hunting season is over) "Isn't it pretty to think so."

Ya DB, I know exactly what your talking about. I watched the last Deer you shot with that thing just stand there after you shot it for at least .002 of a second before it even begin to fall straight down! I wouldn't have that POS in my safe! I'll make you that same offer I made everyone else here. Just drop it by and I'll go ahead and dispose of the POS proper. O, and be sure to bring by all the brass for that thing, as that needs to be disposed of as well.
