Title said it all:

.358 Win and 200 grain bullets, what powder is your favorite?

Edit to add, Brother in Law has gotten one of the new Hawkeye Rugers and we shot it about a week ago with some very old handloads, and would like to modernize the approach. I also want to save my 250 grain Silvertip hoard for personal reasons... The rifle shot very well and some of the old Speer 220 grain bullets and H335 were shooting 1/2 inch at 50 yards. With the relatively big bullet, the group does look tight.

I shot a 200 grain honady spirepoint over Accurate 2520. In two blrs 48 grains will print sub inch at a 100 yards.

308Sako -

I have been thinking about ordering one of the Hawkeyes in .358 Win. Do you know what the maximum .358 Win COL that will fit in the Hawkeye magazine box is?

TreeFarmer, I am sorry I did not measure this "important" dimension when I had the rifle in my hands. I was busy with a house full of nephews and several rifles to assemble and adjust fire control systems. With six boys it was a 1600 round weekend! Early fourth of July, well sort of. I am confident that the usual 2.8+ a little would work however.

My BLR likes win. 748 and IMR3031 with 45.0 of IMR3031 giving tighter groups and chrony at 2400FPS And with 42.0 of IMR3031 its just outstanding with Hornady 250 RN clocked at 2100

Ditto Tanoose's recommendation for IMR3031. My BLR loves it with 200gr Hornady RN.

Great news on the IMR 3031 in stock and plentiful. Appreciate the feedback.

Alternatives you may want to investigate: Varget, Benchmark, Re10x. There is accuracy AND velocity in all of these with 200 grain projectiles.

To tell the truth 2400-2500 fps is plenty for 90% of all deer and hog hunting using 200 grain bullets. With 200 grain bullets I like 3031 because it is easy to find and shoots just fine in my rifle.
