Slicking up an action ?'s

I've done the search here, and read a bit about slicking up an action, and have tried the cycle the action 1000 times thing, no big improvement.

In general, if I want to put some compound into my rifle (lapping compound, JB or whatever) and cycle the action, where do you place the compound? This rifle is a Surgeon action custom in 308, and seems to be a really well built rig, and I like it, except for the fact that the bolt does not cycle smoothly. One of these days I'll learn my lesson and not buy anything other than a Sako--would be Sauer 202's if you could get parts.....

Any input would be appreciated.

Buy a BAT or, a Farley and you will not believe how smooth a bolt can be.

Try putting something Black on the Bolt like Marks-A-Lot and ease it into and out of the receiver one time real slow. Pay attention to when it hits a tight spot and look the Bolt over real close to see where the Black is wiped off.

A Gun Smith would take a very small stone and lightly polish the tight spots out. This includes a whole lot of recoating the Bolt with the Black and trying after just a few strokes with the stone.

Probably better for you(since you are asking), would be to get some "Brightening Toothpaste" and put it into the action where you felt the Tight Spots, give the Bolt 25-50 cycles, wash it out with HOT water. Then try the Black on the Bolt again and as usual pay close attention to any tight spots.

Lapping Compound could be a bit too aggressive depending on the Grit(or Mesh) and how you use it. JB Compound will work great if you have some as will the Brightening Toothpaste.
-----

Try not to get a bad impression about the rifle, cause it will always be a small thorn irritating you and you won't be able to enjoy it. And "Custom Actions" are supposed to be snug. Best of luck to you.

Fish,
I have a Interarms Mark X and a Charles Daly Mauser (same thing) and all I did was work the actions every night while watching TV. They are now both slick as glass but I drove my wife crazy. Thanks...Bill..

clap After our trip last month she asked why her Daly is not as smooth as my 25 year old MKX. I said about 3000 more cycles. Now SHE sits and watches the TV and works her bolt. Don't have the heart to tell her that her guick lock will never be as easy as mine due to the ramp angle. Wink

As usual just my $.02

Don't use lapping compound as it will get into the lugs and that can cause you big problems..

I have stones glassed/glued on to a flat section of heavy welding rod, and put a wood handle on them form dowel rod. I have a can of these in different shapes and different grits. with use they shape to the curvature of the rails or you can sort of pre-shape them on a grinder, I use them with oil and hone an action until its slicker n snot...These tools are about 11 inches long and I work from the rear of the action, then I use 600 grit paper and oil under them to finish...Do not blue this area, so its the last operation in finishing a rifle.

Surgeon makes a tight tolerance action for BR and a loose action for hunting. Sounds like you got the wrong one.

Hey Don, DO NOT get irate at me for asking this, did you try any "slickum"(a light oil like Rem Oil, not WD-40) on the Bolt?
