My rechambered M760 Rem likes a stout load of IMR4895, CCI-LR and the 220gr Speer.

Well, I dunno Jeffe. While back one of the illustrious gun writers said the 250 Hornady IL Spitzer was too hard for .358 velocities. What's a fella to do? Well, they work fine on white tails for me, 2300 fps is about the limit for that gun though, and I haven't make any long shots, or even tried them for that matter.

My real favorite is the 225 gr Partition, for both accuracy and all the rest. Weird as it is, it's the only gun I own that will shoot Partitions better than BT's, and I assure you that the BT's are way too fragile for anything bigger than varmints or paper. At least in my world, your experience may vary.

for 59 bucks, buy a chrono and end the speculation,,,

for my money, the ONLY bullet for the 358 (i have 3 and load for a 4th) is the sierra 225 gameking. The hornady bullets are TOO soft, even at 358 velocities... and the barnes are just too long, even when a bullet a rifle for those 91x10 twist, long throat, etc)

best powders are win748, varget, benchmark, and rl10

you hae just GOT to get a chronograpgh... for the price of 3 cans of powder, there will be no more guessing... but get a CHEAP one first... as you will sooner or later join the "i bagged a chrono" club

Pushing 30 years ago I had the use of a Ruger M77 in .358 and shot almost exclusively the Hornady 250 roundnose bullets. I got tremendous results and good expansion as the bullet is designed for these velocities. (about 2300 ft/sec's.) I used H335 and if memory serves me about 45 grains. The load was also very very accurate. I did not like the spire point version, though I don't remember any bad results.

IT WAS one of the BIG mistakes that WInchester made when they ONLY factory loaded the 200gr and dropped the 250gr Silvertip.
If they had kept the 250 Silvertip load, I would have never started reloading for it. THAT was a GREAT factory load..

You may want to check into the Nosler Ballistic Tip. I was amazed to find no expansion on a doe I shot with the BT two seasons ago. It dropped her within 50 yards but just about a 3/8ths inch hole in and out. I did some research and found that the BTs above .308 are made with a heavier jacket. I was shooting them out of a .358 WCF single shot pistol with a mild load. The lowered velocity, short barrel and range of the doe combined to delay expansion. If you check, I believe you will find it to be correct about the heavier jacket in the .358 diameter. With my 99 I have found the 200 gr Remingtons I buy bulk from Midway in the round nose work fine for whitetail. None have made it more than 5 yards after being hit. I love this caliber and have several toys in it with plans for more .358s in the future. Good luck in your search for the perfect load(s). Packrattusnongratus

Mr. SmallBrownFurryRodentWithTheLongNameWhoGetsNoRespect. You are of course quite correct about the beefed up BT's in .35 cal and greater. They may or may not do odd things in your pistol, but they certainly do whimsical things in my rifle. Fortunately there is Hornady and Nosler's Partition. One of these days I shall endeavor to load some Hornady RN's and see how they work.

Are you Greek or American Indian by any chance? Don't let them hogtie your imagination.

Regards,

Dan

Did you guys use magnum primers with H-335, W-748 or BLC-2 in this caliber? My Speer manual says they did with their data. I loaded a few 25 gr Hornady SP up with BLC-2 since I had a bunch of it, but used a regular Federal 210 primer.

I find the Hornady a little too soft for bear and elk as compared to the Speer .250 I have seldom shot anything over 175 yds with my .358's I use 53 grns of 748 with the 250 grn bullet for 2370 out of my BLR . I believe the .225 Nosler to be the best all around bullet for the .358 but have also had good success and acccuracy with the .225 sierra( look in their manual under .358 and you will see a picture of me with a 443lb blond bear) I use 54 grains of 748 for 2460 out of my Blr.
As for deer use what you like, I shot many with the 200 grn Hornady sp over 47 grns of 3031 for 2523 in the blr.
Consider any .250 load at 2300 a good one.Any .225 at 2450 or 200grn at 2500. Accuracy and bullet placement are more important than speed.
I've shot many bears and moose with the .250 speer with excellent results.
A friend in Calif. has taken his .358 blr to Africa twice and shot all kinds of game with the .225 nosler/54 grns of 748 He says the game he has taken is DRT .
Arnold Holmes, well know guide in Sask. uses his blr .358 for everything and has shot more moose, elk, bear, deer than I will ever see. He likes the .250 speer. However if he doesn't have any handy, he will simply use the factory 200 silvertips !
I've never had to track an animal hit fairly with a .358.
As to powder, H335,AA2520, BLC, all seem to work well. My all time favorite was AA2015br, but it is no longer available.
