Hornady is coming out W/a 170gr SST bullet in 8mm.

http://www.hornady.com/store/8mm-170-Gr.-SST/

What's so interesting about this is the BC is listed as .445.

How can they achieve such a high BC in such a light for caliber bullet?

A Nosler 180gr BT has a BC in the neigborhood of .394, a 200gr Accubond has a BC of .450.

It would be great if the 170gr SST did have a .445 BC as that would allow a realitively flat shooting combo for the venerable 8 X 57IS.

I currently use 200gr pills in mine because they actually shoot just about as flat as the 180s W/better retained energy.

The 150fps Mv advantage of the 180 BT is not enough to overcome the lower BC. The 170gr SST should gain about another 100 FPS MV over the 180gr BT W/a better BC than the 200gr Nosler Partition. A "win win" situation.

W/high energy powders like RL17 the 8x57 should be able to exceed 2900fps W/thye 170gr SST while staying under 60K chamber pressure.

By guesstimating (using the OAL length of the Nosler 180BT for the 170 SST) my Quickload has it @ about 2960 W/less than 59K pressure. Quickload is overly optimistic W/RL17 in my experience but the MV should still hit a bit over 2900 from what I have observed W/200gr bullets.

So, the question is, does anyone think that the .445 BC realistic?

I'm with you on that question WCJ. I hate it when the companies show only illustrations of their products rather than actual photos. You can't accurately access the product. Roll Eyes

I tried to get dimensions of the OAL, boattail length & boattail base diameter to enter into my Quickload program. They have not went into production yet so that data was not available.

I'll just have to invest in a box in the spring to measure an actual bullet. That will give me enough data along W/a measured COAL from the bullet pushed against the lands to do an accurate Quickload prediction.

Lack of historical context by the poster. In the late 18th century, "Conservatives" supported the British government. The American rebels represented the "liberal thinking" of the time.

Another example of a change in political meaning: in today's media German Nazi party members of 1939 - socialists in every meaning of the word - are called "right-wingers". Go figure.....

If you want to be called a liberal it is ok with me. Just remember if you want independence you don't get it being liberal these days.
