Looking at one of these in a local shop as a potential gift for my son. It appears to be in very good condition and they seem to have a pretty strong following. How are they for accuracy? Any feedback appreciated.

My late B-I-L had one chambered in 30/06 and my son shot a 1.25" group at 100 yds with the original iron sights and my go to 150 grain Hornady handload. I am sure with a scope on one they could be extremely accurate. I tried to buy this rifle from Craig (BIL) and he wouldn't even talk about it as he liked it so well. I really liked the way that rifle handled.

Thanks Luckyducker. An old friend of mine went Elk hunting with me this year and he seems to like his a lot. They do have a good feel about them. Ive never shot one though.

Take a look at the one Biebs has for sale in the AR Classifieds. A Deluxe is hard to find and well worth the price!

I saw it, thanks Biebs. Very nice! No one has said much, but apparently they seem to be capable of near MOA accuracy..

The previous owner claims that this one shot under an inch. I've never shot it, but I have 2 boxes of 125gr 30-06 loads (Nosler Trophy, I believe) that I'd thrown in to reduce the recoil for your son, assuming he's a youn'un.

I had one as my first deer rifle...they are accurate, or at least mine and several other friends were. 1.5 MOA or better would be my guess.

I've had two of them and if you've hunted with a pump shotgun these seem very natural. They point nicely and mine were quite accurate. The only thing I didn't like about them was the trigger and the rattly forend. The deluxe that's for sale has a higher comb and works well if you scope it.

The CIA chose the 760 in .223 its the 7600s running mate for an assignation rifle, it passed muster better than anything else they tried, but they never used them, as the democrats pretty much casterated the CIA, so it went the way of $3000 toilet seats, the dead pool!!, along with the CIA as a matter of fact.

I have mounted scopes and sighted in quite a number of them over the years, and they all shot every bit as good as a bolt action..Also I have family and friends that shoot them in .270 and 30-06 as they are a pretty nice saddle gun and at the time you couldn't get a flat sided long range saddle gun. The onl option was the 300 Savage caliber for rimrock Mule deer, that was early on just before the .308 became popular in the 99 Savage, and the 300 Savage and 30-30 were kings in cowboy country, they got by with them just fine, but the Rem pump became fairly popular for a few years, and those old boys that had them still swear by them as the best tool a cowboy can have.

I agree the only thing about them that bothers me is the rattling forend, they make a lot of noise..

Can't say the same for the 740, and 7400 auto, they seem to scatter shots all over the place as a rule..Being automatics they may possibly be tricked up to shoot, dunno??

Today Id opt for a 270 or whatever in a Brownng BLR for a saddle gun, or for any other reason as I still like the lever guns. But I have made do with a .308 mod. 99 Savage for years in 99F fwt. and now I have an EG model and I like it even better...Just my personal opitions. Today the options are out there for whatever blows your skirt up but you can't go wrong with a 7400.

Ray,

The accuracy of the BLR must be phenomenal with a custom barrel, no?

Actually he is returning from the Army after 4 years in a couple weeks and I thought he might like a hunting rifle of his own. Thanks for the offer Biebs, but I opted for the one here, just brought it home today. It is an 06 in near mint condition with a Denver Redfield 3x9 and Leupold base and rings. For $300.00 I couldn't pass it up. Glad to hear the reports of their performance.

oldBack in the mid sixties When I lived in Grand Junction a friend of mine carried a Mod. 760 30-06 with an 18" barrel. He was, perhaps, the best hunter I ever knew and that rifle was an all time game getter. IMO the 760 is one of the best field rifles and I've owned 2. beerroger

I have used a 760 since 1973. Excellent accuracy. With the right loads sub Moa. Just rebarreled a 7600 to 338/06 using a Lot has Walther ss barrel. It shoots sub moa also with barnes ttsx.

I had a 7600 in 35 Whelen and a 760 in 30-06. Both shot 1.25 to 1.5 inches at 100 yards. Nothing wrong with them as shooters, but loading the magazine into the rifle took a bit of getting used to. Sold them off in my Remington purge. Kinds miss the Whelen, but thinking of having a Winchester 95 rebored to 35 Whelen.

I have a 760 in 308 Win. that shoots 1.25" groups at 100 yds. I never did any extensive load work up for this rifle. I only tried two powders and one bullet. IMR 4320 shot slightly better than IMR 4064 with the 150 Gr. Hornady interlock bullet. I called it good enough for deer hunting in PA and have killed quite a few whitetails with this load.

Recently when working up loads for another rifle rifle in 30/06 with 165 Gr. Hornady's I decided to try a few 165's in the 760. These shot 1" groups but I'm sticking with the 150's since I have quite a few of these bullets.

You won't go wrong with a 760/7600.

AR Corey,
I have no idea, I have only owned two BLR's, one in a .308 the other in a .270, neither had a custom barrel or needed one. The BLRs Ive played with and worked on for friends etc. all had factory barrels..None of them needed a custom barrel.
