Does anyone know velocities of these older Winchester rounds. I have 3 boxes in great shape and wondered about how hot they'd be loaded, or not. They are wrapped up and I don't want to unwrap them. Just curious. I have several 270 loads that I have chrono'd and was surprised. The vintage 130's are faster than the '80s and '90s but not quite as faster as the newer silver box. According to the 1977 "The Shooters Bible", Winchester claimed muzzle velocities of 2880 fps for the 180 gr. ST and 2580 fps for the 220 gr. ST (and 3130 fps for the 150 gr. ST), for a 24" barrel. The 1973 Winchester catalogue gives velocities of 2920 and 2620 fps (and 3190 fps), respectively. Barrel length isn't specified, but probably 26", as the 1973 Remington catalogue lists a 180 PSP Core-Lokt at 2920 fps from a 26" barrel. The same velocities are listed in the 1952 "Shooters Bible" (no 150 gr. load though), so were nominally consistent for several decades. Pre-WW2 loads were hotter - the 1937 Winchester listing gives 180 gr. FPBT or HP bullets at 3060 fps and a 220 gr. SP at 2730 fps, from "barrels of standard lengths." Cheers, Al Cheers, Al

I have chronoed some 90s Silvertip Winchester 375 H&H rounds. They averaged over 2500 FPS for 5 rounds.

I ran a couple of rounds thru my old mod. 70 pre war gun with 26" barrel and got what Classical posted depending on the loads and manufacturer but close enough for guvment work! With handloads I got very close to 300 Wby, which was a surprise, and my pressures were warm but safe, and I shot those loads for years.. I load my L61R Sako (24.4" barrel) very close to the "classic" 180 grain velocity at 2960 fps. However, by way of an accidental overload I found that the old warhorse will hit .300 WBY velocities with no apparent pressure signs, just as in Ray's experience. I'm sure this will vary with different barrels/chambers, but the original H&H version of the .300 magnum does it all as far as I'm concerned.

I shot eland, buffalo, Nilgai, and a lot of elk deer, and lots of plainsgame with the 200 gr. Woodligh and Nosler partition with my old mod 70 300 H&H, and it never let me down, never even came close to failure of anykind..Wish I had it back, sold it some many years ago on AR after I got the .338 bug.. The 200 gr. Nosler patition will out penetrate the Rem corelokts, WW silvertip 220 gr bullets all day long...I love those old silvertips and corelokts for deer and even elk in the 180 gr. version and the 150s on deer..Have no use for the 220 gr. Rem or Silvertip, they are just too soft.. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
