Guys I have a chance at a Win 70 featherweight in 308 pre 64. The guy wants $750.00. Its in nice shape but the wood has been refinished. Is the price way too high?
Thanks Greg

a pre-64 does not come cheap, just take a look at the auction sites, they command a fair chunk of money. I believe the "new" Winchesters are going to be a bit higher in price than that with there "new and improved" trigger.

an action that is pre-64 standard is where? 600.00 or so? The .308 sounds good to me, but that is meSmiler

gawd! what ever makes you happy-buy it! Now I am confused by trying to help you, make an offer for 450.00, that would be a steal!

sorry I am no help.

As far as I know I'd say thats a fair price, especially if it's got all it's original parts.

thats really a prety good price.
also a decent rifle. I have one and it shoots real well with IMR-4064 and W-748.

I think that's a good price, as long as the stock refinishing was done professionally and left the checkering alone. I'm also assuming everthing else is original.

I paid $1200 for a pre-64 .270 FWT on GA 2 yrs ago. It was all original with nice wood and metal (about 98% overall).

I was off from work the same day the guy put the ad online. I immed. e-mailed an "I'll take it"... good thing, the guy had 3 more offers by that evening.

After thinking some more about your question.. I'd buy it! Can prob. pick up a decent FWT stock off e-bay for under $500 to make it all original..and use the refinished stock for hunting.

Good luck... Rob

Here's my .270:

Robco, That is one heck of a nice looking 270.
And well worth what you paid.
I am probably stating the obvious here, but a 270 featherweight is much harder to come by than a .308.
If I remember corectly the .308 is the most common, followed by the 30,06 270 and .243 in order.
Also if you are interested , I have a spare featherweight stock, that has a recoil pad on it, and a ssn# neatly stamped into the bottom of the pistol grip.
It came if a 270 I had at one time, but traded away, I hope yours shoots better than that one did.
It is a nice chunk of wood and with a bit of work, would make a nice looking stock to put on your 270 , to save that good looking origional one you have there. I refinished another one you can see on my post my .308s I used lots of oil, really looks prety darn good for unskilled labor and the .308 shoots just fine too !

Thanks for the offer TJ... but my FWT has become a safe queen. For hunting, I'd rather buy a Pre-64 with a pad added or refinished stock, and not worry about babying it. Like you did and the one Fasteel is asking about. Cool

According the Roger Rule's book "The Rifleman's Rifle", the number of Pre-64 FWTs' by rarity of caliber:

(1) .358 ----- 2,000
(2) .270 ---- 22,992
(3) .243 ---- 24,707
(4) .308 ---- 40,989
(5) .30-06 - 44,492

TOTAL 135,180

Good Luck.. Rob

depends on how you feel about winchesters i guess.
price wise, if your looking to resell it then theres money to be made.

as far as the rifle itself...
i dont see a 40 + year old winchester being any better than a new ruger.

The price is a little high for Canada for a refinished un original pre 64. Have picked up a couple very clean original pre 64 featherweights, 30-06 for $600 and a near mint .270 for $700. If you really want it get it, they don't come up very often, apparently the prices refelect that.

That price is about right for a refinished stock..The .308 FWT is fairly rare and brings a premium price of about $1300-$1500 depending on condition...You would be smart to find a mint stock for about $150 and change it out...then you would have made a very good deal...

Jeez, Ray, you're just trying to make me cry in my beer aren't you?

I bought one as-new (but no box or hang tags) here from a guy in Myrtle Point for $500 about 8 years go. Didn't much need it though, so after I shot it occasionally for a year or so, I sold it to a buddy for the same price, Waaaaahhhhh!!

Seven Fifty may be a little high for one that has been slightly redone. As has been pointed out the real value is in an untouched original. I paid $700 for one untouched and in excellent condition 7 or 8 years ago in .270
