Well I’ve googled my fingers to the bone (not to mention the “find” button), so I’ll just ask:

Do any of you guys have experience with the McMillan G-30 Control Round Feed action or their new line of rifles? I’m doing a 338 WM and this McMillan keeps jumping up at me. They’re notorious for high quality products, but I believe the CRF is new to their line.
The original plan was to have a smith build the rifle, but if I can get some good intel on this action and McMillan can make a few adjustments to their standard production (bbl length, cal.), I would be better off buying direct from them.
Your thoughts are appreciated. . . David

G30s are extremely well machined and finished.
But I dont know how well they function when dusted up and dirty.
if CRF is not a high priority, you might also look at the extremely well made Surgeon receiver...for less dollars.

OK; this request for help has gone nowhere, and fast.
So boys and girls, here's the plan. . . I've commissioned a prominent Gun-Guy to build this 338 WM, based on the aforementioned McMillan G-30 CRF. We're still working out the details and I've posed a few questions to McMillan proper. I plan to have this stuff hammered out in the next few weeks with final delivery in 6 to 8 months.
The following are the basics from which we'll derive perfection (the plan anyway):

1) Action - McMillan G30 CRF (Control Round Feed)
2) Barrel - Lilja (or Krieger, Rock, etc); 22"; 338 WM chamber; fluted; #6 contour; target crown; twist 1-10
3) Stock - McMillan Prestige or Win Safari; OD, BLK, TAN marbled; 14.25" LOP w/ 1" Packmayr Decelerator Pad
4) Bottom Metal - Badger, Williams, etc {stock and BM need to accommodate a 4+1 (if possible) round count}
5) R&M - Talley Rings and Mounts; Stainless Steel or Badger rings with NightForce 2 pcs base (will use S&B Zenith 1.5-6 x 42)
6) Finish - All metal OD Cerakote, except Bolt, send it for NP-3 treatment

Words from the wise are not only welcome, but requested. Oh (by the way) this rifle will be used for large/dangerous game in Alaska and plains game in Africa, please revise your thoughts accordingly. Thanks for your time and effort in this matter. . . David

Hey Trax: Sorry, I should have replied sooner. Yes; CRF is a big deal with me, I want the insurance for upcoming hunts.
Yes: Surgeon makes an OUTSTANDING action, I have one chambered in .308. In fact; it's still at my local gun shop. It was ordered about a year ago, and just finished. I'm working in Afghanistan and won't be home until October (and only for 3 weeks), just enough time to do a bbl break-in. After the next 6 month'r, I'll take some time off. I intend to re-introduce myself to my firearms. THEN, after the next (or next) deployment, I'll actually get to do some serious hunting. Again, its the plan and subject to change.

I would go with Badger or Nightforce rings any day over Talley. I had problems with Talley rings and their customer service. I also had two different people there tell me different torque specs.

I have a NF scope and NF rings, but bought a Badger picatinny base. The thing I didn't like about NF bases is that they are all tapered (at least they were when I was going to buy them). I didn't want tapered bases, so I bought the Badger. They make some great stuff.

I had problems with my NF scope moving when I mounted it on my 338. The thing weighs 31 ounces, so you really have to anchor it. Badger makes some wider rings which would have been perfect, but I put it on my 300 wsm with less recoil, so no more movement issues. I will buy Badger rings if I change it back. I would assume your S&B is substantially lighter.

Thanks 338zmag - I concur with the ring thing; I like the idea of Badger rings and being able to (easily) torque the hold points prior to hitting the bush. They have been proven time-and-time-again in the battle field.
As for the base; the Smith suggested NF, because I requested a two (2) piece set up. I want to keep the area around (and above) the ejection port open.
I think I've got a good build in the works here; the one issue that may haunt me is the weight: It's looking like 9 lbs and thats with a #5 un-fluted bbl. The #6 fluted should be close to the same; also, the weight was figured with Badger bottom metal.
That's a new problem: Badger BM and the Winchester Safari stock will only support 2 in the mag and 1 in the pipe. This is unacceptable and that's the questions posed to McMillan proper. I need 4+1, but not sure if thats achievable?
Once again; input is encouraged. Thanks guys. . . David
