For you .358 Fans, I have a few questions.

1. Any experience with the 225 gr TSX in this caliber? I'd be interested in loads/velocities/bbl length.

2. As for bbl length I am considering rebarreling a M-70 Classic Stainless. I'd like 24 inches, less if practical, while still getting 2800 fs plus for the 225 gr TSX. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
Doug

Don't have one, but I bet you could get those numbers with a 22" bbl, or close enough not to matter.

I have a 19 or 19.5" don't remember without pulling it out of the safe. It gives 2700fps from Norma Factory 250s. Loadtech gives 2800-2900 from a 20". An extra 40-50fps from a 22". The 358 Norma is not overbore. So you don't really need the long barrel or real slow powder. The 4350s would be a nice powder to start.

As usual just my $.02

I get 2950 fps (chronographed) with 69.5 gr. H4895 amd 225 Nosler Partition in my 23" Sako. One of the beauties of the 358 Norma is it's slightly underbore capcity allows the efficient use of medium powders like H414, VV150 and H4895 along with 4350 & R19.

I just recently got my three five eight. It is a K98 with a 28" ported barrel. Going to get cut though! Probably going to go to 25" or 26". What I would like to hear about is peoples experience with 270gr to 280gr loads? A-square manual says that you can get 2750fps with the 275gr. if this is true you would have one thumper!! I just wish you could legally use this caliber for Buffalo, and that they made a 300gr bullet that could stand the velocities generated by this round.

nyrifleman-
I have shot 250 Noslers out of my Sako at 2810fps w/75 gr. of H4350. It's good load with great accuracy. Also had a 280 gr. Swift load of 80gr. of R 19 for 2720 fps. that was too hot in summer but OK in winter. Highly compressed but all the gun I wanted in terms of recoil.
The 358 Norma is a great cartridge. I shoot 225's now because of the better ranging. I've found that ranges can be on the long side for moose or caribou in Alaska.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

How about the 310grn. Woodliegh? Or 280 grn. Swift A-Frame?

Has anyone tried any 180 gr's? Seems like they would shoot really flat out to around 300 yds. and would be more than adequate for elk. Shot placement is always the key!

225 grains Barnes X 79 grain VV N160 2854 f/s in a 26" Douglas SS. I think you can increase that with TSX.

That is over the top by a good margin, my suggestion is 80 grain of R22, a 3 feet droptube and a 280 A-frame. It’s not compressed at all with a 3 feet droptube.

The max velocity of the 310gr Woodliegh is listed as 2200fps on there web site. I believe you could exceed 2200fps easily in the three five eight Norma. I do like the 280gr swift, but I just would like the option of the bigger 300gr with it higher SD, and penetration.

With a 24" barrel Loadtech gives loads to just over 2500FPS for the 310.

I have a custom Norma on a M70 classic stainless action. It wears a 23 1/2" Pac-Nor stainless tube with 12 twist.

With it, 2800 was easy to get with 250 grainers and IMR4350, but it has been tougher to get velocities with the 225 triple shock. I finally ended up getting 2940 with Ramshot Big Game, with groups well under an inch. Haven't got my load recipes with me, but i can get back to you on that.

Rickf-
Ditto for me too, Rick. I'm always on the lookout for more loads for the .358 Norma.

If you're planning on the heavy for caliber bullets, ie 280's and 310's, make sure you go with a faster barrel twist, ie 1-12 or 1-10.

Back the 225 TSX, I'd expect a 24" 358 Norma to be on the low side of 3000 fps, you can push 250's towards 2800.

I have that rifle made on a ss Winchester that was a 338, It was barreled with a Kreiger 25" barrel and stocked in an older Rimrock stock. Devistating on elk. Mine is a fast barrel.
