I bought a used "minty" BDL in 7mm Rem Mag. Haven't got to shoot it yet (too cold and snowy). The serial number (I think) is RR87438G I've been trying to figure out what year it is. Based on a few websites I think it's a Nov 1968 model. I'm really just curious as I bought my BDL in 270 Win in 1968 that I gave my son. I have a picture of the rifle and the serial number below. Any help appreciated.

Regards,

Chuck

I am not familiar with the Remington serial numbers.
Is that engraved area to the right of the serial number a "bar code" like they put in Marlin rifles ?

Edit:
There is a 2 letter date code on the barrel. I don't recall which side. That might be it shown in the picture. With the date code, google Remington serial numbers. I do have a few of the rimfire rifles, from the 1960's through the 1980's and I have done this.

Remington uses a date code on the barrel to indicate when it was made. In the photo, yours appears to be BK. The first letter is the month, January. The second letter is the year. Some years they used double letters for the year, but mostly they just start over every 20 some odd years. They didn't use all 26 letters every time. The also dropped the date code for a few years. Yours couldn't be a 1990 because it has that square bar code monstrosity on it. The last list I have shows I=2012.

Well there you go, Idmay375 posted while I typed slowly. That listing shows K as 2016.

You don’t use the serial number on Remingtons, instead use the two letter code on the barrel.

Remington date codes:
The month letter,

B = Jan
L = Feb
A = Mar
C = Apr
K = May
P = Jun
O = Jul
W = Aug
D = Sep
E = Oct
R = Nov
X = Dec

The year letter,

E = 2010, F = 2011, G = 2012, H = 2013, I = 2014, J = 2015, K = 2016, L = 2017, M = 2018, N = 2019, O = 2020...

So it looks like your rifle is January 2016.

Thanks much! Not vintage but still pretty "minty" Will take it out for a spin when the weather gets a little warmer.

Thanks, it's not a QR code but sure looks like one. Found out it's 2016 rifle. Got it roughly sighted in today, gonna bring the spotting scope out, finish sighting it in and shoot for group size next warm day.

Chuck

Forgive my ignorance but is the full rifle shown at the top the 7mm mag supposedly made in 2016 or the one from the 1960s? I can believe the latter possibility as I thought white-line spacers went out with cross-ply tires.

The early 700's had pressed checkering, and a flag safety, easy way to tell a "vintage" model.

The early ones say "stainless steel" on the barrel too.

No it's some Remington proprietary thing. Gun was made in 2016, wish it were older. Having the trigger replaced by Kevin Weaver with the older Remington style that locks the bolt on safe and having it adjusted to 2 3/4 lbs. He just did that on our Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby, works great.
