These are both a little under 40" in length and weigh 6.5 lbs.If you were going to buy a 7mm-08 and were limited to the choices below, what would you choose?Remington 7 CDLWinchester Featherweight Compact

cobraI've got two Savage Sierras and a Mannlicher carbine from Remington's custom shop in that calibre and I wouldn't trade any of them. Of the choices you have I would go with the Winchester Featherweight.

DeweyI would not choose either, my choice last year was to buy a beater Remmy 600 Mohawk,, strip it foe the action and begin to accumulate parts.
I bought a Remmy Mtn. Rifle sts. factory tube in 7-08.
I bought a sts triggerguard from Dave Kiff's outfit.
I bought a spare bolt and trigger and some other parts from a guy so I can have an "emerg." kit on backpack trips where this is my sole rifle.
I just found and bought a Brown Precision stocl made specifically for this action and have bolted it all together...a VERY light and nicely balanced rig, almost a pound and a half lighter than any of my custom light .270Win, .280Rem or other standard chamberings built on P-64, HVA and Brno 21 actions.
This, to me, is an easy and very effective way to go and with either Talley QRs or, if it will fit, the Leupy QR 1-piece base and low rings x 2 and a light scope x2, I will have a superb high country rifle for most BC game.

raybassNeither to be honest, Rem. 700 SS Mountain Rifle in the caliber of choice, add TI stock, Talley Lightweights and a lightweight scope.
Straight shootin to ya

BlacktailerIsn't the Winchester Compact made with short LOP for smaller shooters? Unless you are on the small side it may not fit you.

It's a 1/2" difference in LOP just like the RCMS. I doubt I would even notice.

and if just happens to be chambered in .280 Remington......all the better.

Woodrow SI voted for the Winny...I have one in .308 Winchester in the CRF Compact Classic and it's a dandy rifle.

scottfromdallasWhinny seems to be running away with it. Maybe I'll go with the standard size FW. Love the unique stock design of the FW.

I really like the M-70 FWT rifles.....I have four of them.....but in all fairness one needs to know that they aren't as much of a featherweight as they might seem....they do tend to be a heavy featherweight.....if weight is real important....look elsewhere.

Thanks Vapo my friend. They list them at 6 3/4lbs. I'll strap a lightweight scope on the sucker and be happy with a sub 8lb rifle. I recently bought a CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55 and it weighs a little over 8lbs sans scope. Love the rifle for the place I recently bought in East Texas (stand hunting). If I head out West (maybe Western NE

) and actually have to hoof it, I want a lighter rifle.

SDhunterI would have to handle both and see which one feels the best to me.
LOP, how it comes to shoulder, point naturally, overall handling impression.

May I suggest Talley one piece (bases and rings) aluminum mounts and a Leupold 3-9 X 33 ultralite scope.....You'll be well under 8 pounds....and a sharp looker to boot!
