I have an older Model 721 Remington chambered in 270 that I have had for 43 years. This was my first center fire rifle and has served me well over the years. It has now spent the last 18 years in the safe and now that I have my Dad's 270 I think the old 721 needs some new life breathed back into her.

My goal is to build a medium range rifle with a sporter barrel and laminate stock for walking mountains and sand hills. I have other heavy barrel rifles (7 MM STW and 338 Sin that I can use to stretch out there on pipelines or down canyons from a stationary spot.

The build components:

721 long action, Criterion 26" Remage barrel chambered in 280 AI from Northland Supply, new oversize lug from Northland Supply, Laminate Stocky Stock with aluminum bedding block, TriggerTech trigger from Northland Supply, Vortex HST 4X16X44 MOA scope (still up in the air on scope). Rented Go/No go gauge from http://www.reamerrentals.com/default.asp.

280 AI load will likely be H 4831 or H 4350 with a 140-168 Berger VLD bullet and secondary load of Nosler Accubonds in similar weight. I prefer Hodgdon extreme powders due to I hunt pigs in the Texas summer and we can get freezing temperatures during deer season and these powders seem to not give me problems with that temperature spread as others brands have. This combination should get me very comfortably out to 600 yards which is my restricted yardage for shooting at deer size game. The realty has been most of my shots have been under 325 yards on my western hunts but I practice out to 823 yards at my home range.

Well that's my plans anyway, now just need to get it started?

Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..
