I recently inherited a sporterisd Mauser model 98. It has the #41 on the reciever ring. The # 3826 on the side of the recieving ring. Also a very small Nazi eagle with badge on the side and a few other #'s to small and/or worn to make out. I found on the internet that the caliber is/was a 7.92 X 57. I am sure it has been rebored given the custom stock on it and that it was owned by a gunsmith ( my dad). What would be the most likey modern caliber ammo for it? I tried chambering a 22- 250 and its not that. Thanks

Could be any one of a number of chamberings. If the barrel is not chamber stamped, the only way to tell for sure would be to do a chamber cast which is really quite simple.

Have a gunsmith do a chamber cast as posted above- surest, safest way to get good use out of your rifle.

If the barrel is still the stepped military variety as the rifle would have been issued with, I'd put my money on it being an 8(7.92)x57.

But check it.

There is a cersive small letter b on one side. There is also the cersive Capitol letters LB above the 41

Turns out its been converted to a 22-250.
