I have a guy selling a 270 win model 70-pre 64 rifle in great shape even has the old style bases and scope on it but he cut off 3 inches off the barrel-why, who knows so it when from a 24" to a 21" barrel. Is this gun worth anything now ? Thanks Confused

It is worth what the action and stock are worth.

Cutting the barrel off spoiled it as a collector.

I don't think you could find a finer working rifle. The good 'ole .270 isn't hurt with a 21" tube.

Well, the collector appeal is gone. But I have used 270's with 20" barrels, and they killed things very nicely......

Yup again. If you pick it up, and assuming that you want an original condition rifle, you can find decent pre-64 take off barrels with the correct markings fairly easily.

Having gone down that route, parts on pre 64's are not 100% interchangeable. There is no reason, outside of luck, to assume that a pre 64 take off barrel will index correctly.

My recommendation, shoot it as is, or have it rebarreled to a caliber you like.

There is nothing wrong with a M70 in 270.

In my experience, about 99% will.

I will also chime in that 99% of the barrels will line up and headspace just fine, especially if of the same era; the older the better as far as pre 64 quality/craftsmanship. My brightest, crispest bore of all of my M70's is my first year production 30Gov't06 with a 1935 dated C.M.S. marked barrel.

I have two and both are wonderful rifles. The 270 with the 21" barrel would be a very handy rifle indeed and I think these days sports a better value than $500 imho - besides value is dynamic - always changing. I think the pre 64 action is one of the finest ever produced and you can't go wrong. A 30-06 size barrel will fit and probably drop in your correct stock easily - I have done a couple - don't get a magnum barrel tho and try to fit it in there - fwiw - jb

Gotta be a VERY useable rifle.
If the price is right, buy it, and never look back. Might be a good candidate for a Mannlicher stock job.. Would look good.

I would value it at about $650 to $750. Actions are hard to come by for less than $550 these days.

So, the pre-64 featherweight in .308 I just bought for $300 was a good deal? I almost didn't buy it until the owner threw in 300 rounds of factory ammo. Big Grin

I'd guess that since the barrel has been bubbaed, it would be worth in the $400-$500 area as well. That's assuming everything else is in good condition. True, if it shoots, it could be considered a handy rifle to use. My understanding is that the .270 Win. is the second most common pre-64 chambering - behind the .30-06.
I wanted a pre-64 in .270 Win. for years & finally bought one that had been bubbaed for $750. When I took it to my gunsmith for some minor work, he gave me a lecture that I'll never forget, basically telling me that if I had wanted a pre-64 in .270 Win., I shoulda gone to him since he said he could have picked one up for me in better shape for considerably less.
I'd say that if you like it & it shoots, buy it but I wouldn't pay more than I mentioned above from your description. BTW, my pre-64 continually shoots 1" or less groups all day long & I trust it implicitly. Just my opinion.

Whenever people ask what an action/rifle is worth, I always say, whatever you're willing to pay. Of course, your idea of what its worth may differ from the seller's or another buyer's.
