don't know if this will help,I use a 340 wby. in a mk 5 deluxe. i use 180 gr. nosler solid base, ballistic tip pushed by 88.0gr of imr 4831 at 3364 fps. 93% load density. This is my black tail deer size load. For elk size game i use 225gr hornady spire point pushed by 82.0gr of imr 4350 at 3000 fps. made good clean kills many times with each. the nosler load is out of there no. 5 book, Hornady is third edition, both are max loads use caution! hope this helps. Kos: You may want to look at the "Reloading Pages" right here in this forum. Scroll down the page to "accuratereloading.com), then look the Reloading Pages. The .340 Weatherby is just a super .338 like the .300RUM, .330 Dakota, .338 Lazzeroni, .338 Lapua, etc. All use the same projectiles, except that the two types of bullets you mention in your post may be useful for long range shooting. In my view these types of bullets are too fragile for close range work on big game larger than deer. Bullets used for large game hunting with the .338 RUM should do well with you .340 Weatherby. For long range shooting on small game you should not have any problem with the softer bullets such as the ones you already use, but for close range hunting of large tough game I would use tougher bullets such as follows, starting with the lighter ones: 230-grain Fail Safe (FS) 225-grain Barnes XLC 225-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw (TBBC) 225-grain Swift A-Frame 250-grain Barnes X 250 to 275-grain Swift A-Frame 250-grain Nosler Partition (or partition Gold) 250 to 300-grain Woodleigh The Nosler Partition and Woodleigh may be close in performance for what I hear form hunters, but I have not use Woodleigh bullets so far. They are too expensive in Alaska. Ray Atkinson talks well of these bullets. What I would do if I was you is to post a "post new subject" asking what hunting projectiles would be best for the .338 RUM and .340 Weatherby. This way you would get lots of answer about bullets. Post something like this: ".340 Wby. and .338RUM favorite hunting bullets/handloads" [ 03-16-2003, 22:36: Message edited by: Ray, Alaska ] | |||
