I have a SS short action, barreled with a MRC barrel in .358 Win. It shoots groups as small as 1/4 inch (3 shots @ 100 yards) and normally groups at about 1/2 inch. It is stocked and bedded by Serengeti.
will this short mag action also work with the 308 family of cases, and if so why don't CZ offer those in the model 3 or would that cut into the 550 market share

That's a good question and the right answer, I think. A lot easier to start new than to get reliable feeding from a standard CZ action.
I doubt that 308 class guns would actually cut into their 550 gun sales though because the rifles are styled so differently that there probably isn't much consumer overlap.
The other point raised by your question is the MRC action is a slam-dunk for longer rounds like the 6MM Rem, 7x57, 257 Roberts and such. Plenty of magazine space to seat heavier bullets out to the lands. They really ought to come out with a 376 Styer too.

i like them. so far i have gotten five, four left handed and one right handed. they all have been tight and straight. the finish has been more than acceptable given the work needed to make them into rifles, without worring about any marks during the process. they do finish up nice without alot of work. they are not dakota's but they dont cost as much as them either. they sure are not lightweights though. believe they are a better value than any surplus military action and compare favorably, maybe even better than, any of the current factory guns.

I have one of their barrel-actions in 220Swift with a 1-12 twist. You can see one of the groups on their website. I like it enough that I ordered another one to build a rifle for my grandsons. Both are chrome-moly. Very pleased with the first one hope to be with the next one.

I made the drive from South Central North Dakota down to Greeley, Colorado yesterday for the 3rd season which opens Saturady. Had a long 12 hours to think. I decided to build a new rifle using a Montana action. I've been to their web site, but a picture isn't worth a thousand words.
I will go stainless, and that's the only firm decision.
If I do it, and the moneyin my pocket is betting I will, how are the:
Fit and finish.
How accurate are they, once compelete?
How do you users rate Montana barrels for accuracy?

The current Rifle magazine has two articles on them. One is Serengeti Trading Company rifles based on Montana Actions and the other article is about the CZ Model 3, the MRC actions for short mags. My personal experience is that it is a good action. Mine has none of the finishing problems that others have stated, such as flat spots. It is still as cast below the stock line and in the raceways but the feedramp is polished. The barrel seems to be well done and smooth. I have gotten a several half inch groups before my stock cracked. I can't go to much into the accuracy until my stock gets back and I can do some more testing. Other people seem to be doing well with accuracy with most under an inch. There are lighter actions out there. Mine, stainless magnum short action, weighed 45ozs with floor plate. I will say if you are looking for the best there are other actions out there. But the MRC99 is a good solid aciton for a working rifle. Take a look at Serengeti Trading Company, they offer action polishing as a service and can build you a complete rifle.

I have two short actions and I'm pretty pleased for what I wanted to build. MikeL is right, they are not light or particularly small. The "short" action is actually an intermediate sized action and is within 3/16 of an inch (end of tang to end of front ring) of being the same length as my CZ 550 Magnum 416 Rigby action.
I think I might go another way for a chrome moly action just because of the number of choices available but if I wanted a stainless gun I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. In fact, I have two of the Professional Hunter actions pending in the charter program.
