Just picked up a new (somewhat used) Steyr 30-06 and ran the first loads through it:

168 gr TSX - 58.5 gr IMR4831 - 2759 fps

180 gr Accubond - 59 gr RL19 - 2709 fps

200 gr Accubond - 59 gr RL22 - 2595 fps

It seems to be one of those rare guns that will shoot any weight bullet. dancing clap

I had a 30-06 synthetic proffesional (rear locking) bought out of curiosity some years ago, didnt worry about the rear locking cause the action was so seductively smooooth! .plus that subtle spiral barrel. It had the wonderful trim factory rings and i put a zeiss6x32c on it. what a delightful rig. Sold it cause a guy was so eager on it. silly me I never tried the push forward set triggger, cause I didnt know it had one. homer
still keen on the older rear locking short action in 308win.

Woodjack,

Nice groups, indeed!

I guess that question was meant for me. Yes, it is a SBS 96 wood stocked imported by GSI. The only complaint I have is that the bolt is extremely tight and I have to put a thumb on top of the scope to give leverage to lift the bolt. Guess the lugs lock down too tight. Could have the lugs lapped but don't really want to mess with it.

Sorry woods, it's getting late here on the east coast!

The reason I asked is that I have one of those SBS 96 Steyrs (also imported by GSI, and also with a wood stock) in 9.3x62mm that is unfired NIB and have heard great things about them.

Mine doesn't have the tight bolt, though. If I were you, I might want to get that fixed.

I love Steyr rifles. All of the ones I have owned and shot have been very accurate (along a wide range of bullet weights like your rifle is) and they feed very smoothly. The SBS 96 rifles are known for having stiff bolt lifts but this usually becomes easier after some use.

I have a new Steyr SBS in .222rem. 1/2 inches most things, recently shot my first ever .3 with it. Funny, it really doesn't like handloads with the bullets set out near the lands, once I shortened the OAL to match factory OAL (60 thou shorter), groups dropped from 1.5 to 0.5".

You are right, bolt lift is stiff after firing, I am hoping this will ease with use. Only have about 100 rounds throught it so far. It is a beautifully balanced little rifle.

Can't help myself, this is it:

Steyr did produce a different bolt cam for the SBS to help the bolt lift problem (I have them in both my SBS rifles).

I will see if I can nail down a source for you guys.

Brian, that rifle is beautiful. Keep posting pictures.

Steyr rifles , those that came AFTER the Mannlicher-Schoenauer seem to be infinitely accurate. I've been a convert to them ever since I bought my first one in 1970. Most of the Steyr's I have started out as one inch rifles, then improved as I developed handloads for them. Right now I am experimenting with an early 6.5x57mm Model M I discovered in like new condition (don't think it had ever been fired), and it does under an inch with S&B fgactory ammo - taking it deer hunting Monday.
For mrlexma, I have a good friend who is now using my ex SBS-96 Prohunter 9.3x62mm, and he has collected three Elk, a Moose, a Mouflon, a Boar, and three Mulies with it. I think you should get your 9.3mm Steyr to working.

I have a source for the SBS bolt cams and smoothing work on the bolts that will reduce the effort to cock the action.

If interested, shoot me an email for the details.

I had a Steyr Scout that would touch three 168gr Federal Match bullets at 300 yards all day. If I weren't a serious Blaser shooter, I would still be shooting the Steyr's.

I have 3 Scouts including 2 308's and an HB 308. They are indeed very accurate rifles but I would have to see it to believe that any 308 will touch .308 caliber holes all day long at 300yds.............................DJ

Just got back from deer hunting with the Steyr 6.5x57mm Model M. Took one Whitetail doe at a hair over 100 yards, went down like hit by a thunderbolt. Very impressive, especially for a 112 year old cartridge. Took my other deer with a not so aged .257 Roberts from a Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

Oh Yes! The 200 grain accubond seems to be an accuracy winner. I've used them in .30-06 and .300 H&H with similar results. very cool !!!
