I recently bought a Parker Hale in .308W calibre, from a local shop. They also threw in 100 rounds of ammo but, when I got it home and had a look, the ammunition is stamped as 7.62.

I'm a little confused here as this is the first time I've ventured into .308 territory, are the two calibres interchangeable?

My first thoughts would be that they are not, as miking the rounds seem to show significant differences in projectile and case.

However, my calipers are not the best quality and I don't have 100% confidence in them till I've been able to get them calibrated.

I can't believe, though, that a unsmith would make such a basic mistake as to give out the wrong ammunition for a rifle that he's sold.

Any ideas?

Essentially the same. It is safe to fire a 7.62 in a 308. However, sometimes, due to differences in the chamber and throat dimensions the reverse does not apply.

Thanks Guys

I've reloaded for many years with .243W, 9mm parabellum and 12g in nitro and black powder.
No matter how much I know, there always seems to be much more that I don't and I'm grateful to this forum and its members for the help that they so freely give.
