I bought one this year and I really like this little compact magnum.I loaded it with 165gr bullets using IMR-4350,Winchester WXR and Reloader-22 powders, staying 1.5-2.0grs. under max for my rifle,I'm getting round 3030fps velocity with muzzle energy around 3400 foot lbs.Now that is some serious firepower for most anything you would want to hunt for,in it's class of calibers. Is it accurate?Hell yea it is.I get a lot of clovers and ragged hole groups with it.I think it's also one of the short magnums that will be around awhile.

I have one. It's an okay hunting round (very good, to be fair) it isn't a round you cane play with much, if you like that sort of thing- I do. The mags tend to be short and limit your playing with seating depth for top accuracy. Best with 165g. bullets or else the bullet takes up to much powder space and velocity suffers. 300 Wm. is more versatile.

I am getting 3050 fps. with 180gr. Rem. CoreLoks and 69gr. of Accurate 4350 out of a 24" barrel. Have not killed anything with it yet but will give a try this year. Accuracy has been descent - 1&1/2" @ 200yds. If I had something more powerful than a 10X scope, I think I could do better at 200yds.

Gary,

Not sure I follow your logic. The neck on a 300 WSM is 31/1000 longer then the neck on a 300WM. While the height of the shoulder is 19/1000 longer on a 300WM the diameter of the case at the bottom of the shoulder is 49/1000 bigger in diameter on the WSM.

That would lead me to believe that seating deeper in a 300 WM actually reduces more case volume in a WM than a WSM.

It has been my experience than seating closer to the lands is usally the accuracy adjustment not further.

As far as performance with 180 grn bullets there is less than 25 fps difference when you look at the average top end velocities for the two cartridges across a wide range of powders.

Can you explain more?

Mike

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I have two Sakos and a Blaser in 300WSM. The Sakos have plenty of room to fiddle with seating depth and the Blaser has even more. So far about everything I have worked up will do better than 1 MOA and some loads are ragged one hole groups. The 300 WSM is an easy round to work up hunting quality ammo for.

imo the 300 wsm is marginally better than the 06'. i had a win classic m70 s/s in 300wsm. used 180gr failsafes for elk. killed a couple with it but couldn't distinguish it from my 06'. sold the wsm. however, for the one gun hunter who includes elk, moose, and bear, it would fill the bill just fine (but so would the 06').
