oh man, in that article there is a picture of Harry Selby's daughter with a huge bull elephant she had brained with a 275 rigby.

The article does not show close-ups of the Bell/Ruark/Selby rifle. It does show some other 275 Rigbys owned by the author of the article. Also, the particular rifle sold from the Bell estate to Ruark and given to Selby is not the only 275 Rigby owned by Bell. In addition to Rigbys (including a 416), Bell owned and used many rifles. The Ruark/Selby rifle is a take-down version and possibly not the same rifle used by Bell to kill all those elephants. In fact, 6.5 Mannlichers, a 303 Enfield and 318s are mentioned by Bell among the small bores he used for elephant.

It is wonderful to see the interest in Bell's rifle, and the fine work done to track it down. Gail sent me to this forum for more info on the gun, and it has been an eye opener.
Gail is a wonderful lady and someday I hope to meet her.
I am so glad the rifle survived, as I have been researching it for some time, and the rumours as to its whereabouts flourished. It was supposedly in the London Times, and destroyed, lost at sea when Bells ship he was on sank in the Med and so fourth. I resently found out about Robert Ruark, and the connection, but all I could get from Ker, and Downey was that it was sold, to an unknown buyer, through Christies, or Bonhams I beleive they said. Now the story is almost finished.
I own Bell' 318 Westley Richards double rifle by Thomas Bland and Sons. I have the factory letter and Glenn the owner of Thomas Bland and Sons verified it this summer on personal examination. Can' do better than that. I am trying to download the picture so I hope it comes out.

Thats so nice, thanks for the pics. What is the widget on the leaf side of the rifle behind the action? I'm guessing safety seeing as the normal safety location is taken up by that nice wee peep sight. [grovel] I don't 'spose there would be a chance of a close up of that area & maybe an open action shot showing the rimnless ejectors?[/grovel] Smiler

Yes, you are correct, sir. That is a Greener side safety.

This is reply I got on research I am doing on Bell. This is from Paul Roberts, past owner of Rigby. I am trying to track down the Bell rifle owned by the London Times. Any way this is an interesting foray into how many guns that Rigby made for Bell, and the fact he did not just own small bores. A double 416 is definetly not a light recoiling rifle in anyones book. I think this means they made 2 of them for Bell. Or perhaps it just means 2 barrels. I don-t know yet.

Dear Mr Duncan

I regret we have no rifles of W.D.M Bell and in the past only owned a .22 HP calibre Rigby bolt rifle. We built about 16 Rigby rifles for W.D.M Bell including 2 x .416’s. I don’t know where you got the London Times story but as far as I know it has no foundation.

Yours sincerely
Paul Roberts

I have a Rigby .275, serial number 4732. Is any history available on this rifle, either from J. Roberts & Son or Rigby California? Do any of the rifles atributed to WDM Bell have serical numbers listed?
Thanks
