I guess a down loaded 338 RUM would be the best 338 RUM. I had Partition 250gr bullets loaded. I know the other bullets wouldn't hold up except a few. I'm not going to take a ship to Alaska to take long shots at Grizzle Bear anytime soon.

After reading all of these posts again, I am a little at a loss, or why people living in Delaware or Maryland have a real use for firearms of this power, unless they do get to travel frequently to places that they can take advantage of them.

I have all sorts of respect for those guys that like the Macho factor involved etc. But not the guys than can't shoot them.

Like Jon A and I in the past really got into it over the need for a magnum. I still do not see it in most instances, unless the guy can take advantage of what it offers. Jon A is one of those guys who can, and do so very well. He is the except rather than the rule.

As Jon A and Mike 375 pointed out, the 338 Ultra Mag is something more like the shooters rifle for long range. It takes a specialist to apply it.

I once thought I needed to have things like a 375 and 416, and a 458. However not hunting where things can eat me except Cougars, and I don't need a big rifle to take them.
Too many rifle guys discount a good old 12 gauge as a protection rifle. IN close quarters, I will take a 12 gauge with buckshot as first shot and a rifle slug as second shot and intermitten the loadings like that over any centerfire rifle.

I respect all riflemen's choices, but As Allen Day pointed out at their range, same as mine., A lot of owners of big rifles can't handle them. As I heard someone say the other day, they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when shooting from the inside, lol.

Cheers and Good shooting

To my way of thinking the the 338 Ultra, 338/378, 375 Ultra and 378 Wby are more of a "shooters" gun and the 338 Win and 375 H&H more of a "hunters" gun.

Mike

Mike, this is by far the most reasonable post I've seen in a long time!

I don't just hunt in Delaware. I'm from New York. I go to different states and countrys. Where rifle hunting is leagle
In De. you can only use shotguns which is alright cause this is flat land. There are Ranges close by for sighting in rifles or shooting pistols. I have a friend that I hunt with. He's not from around here either. We travel together. In Jan. 2004 we were in Alabama in June we were in N. Carolina. Don't know where we'll go next.Just for your information with my 338 Ultra Mag I put 3 bullets in the same hole with out a brake at 150 yds. I don't think there are to many out there that could do that.
Good shooting to you

Because sooner or later a "hunter" realizes it's more about shot placement, a 300 Winchester, 338 Winchester, or a 375 H&H will all do the job just fine. I'd rather spend my money on hunting trips, as opposed to sitting at the range talking about what my 300 zippensplitter can do to an Elk at 500 yards.

I really can't see compareing the 338 Ultra to any other rifle cause the only one that comes close is the Lapua 338
All others have there place and so do these. They can be down loaded or loaded to the the max. Thats the way things are. I was just really impressed with the fact that the Ultra had over 5000 FT. LBS. and I know that to hunt Elephant the rifle used has to have 5000 FT. LBS. and a larger Calber than 338. Good hunting to you!

On a 200lb or less thin skinned animal the 338ultra mag will do far more damage and kill alot quicker than any elephant gun.It is not just for long range hunting.

it's pretty much the same here as it is "in the real world", currency doesn't necessarily accord or equal credibility!

The "logic" behind where you like and what type/caliber of gun you own sounds rather Obamaish to me.

How about, He lives in America and has not committed a crime that would restrict him from owning what ever he wants to and that's that!

Why can't you own a 50 BMG and live in the Bronx? I live in Nebraska at the base of the Great Sandhills what can I won.

Where you live and what you do and don't hunt, to me, should have nothing to do with owning something or not.

Second Amendment, Period.

The display of PURE POWER is nothing short of AWESOME !
