Look in a loading manuel and use what ever powder you happen to have. Really doesn't make much differnce.

The couple of powders I would go with are R22 (always had the best speed and accuracy with it), and next would be either IMR 4350 or H4831.

I have always used H-4831 with 150s in the .270. Max should be somewhere from 56-58 gr.

I've tried H-4831, H-4831sc, Reloader 19, Reloader 22, and IMR-4350.

Found both the tightest group and the highest velocity was obtained with IMR-4350! Recipe was 150 SGK, Fed. case and CCI 200LR primers. Velocity was 3,025 fps with temp. = 80F. I have a Remington 700 long action that also has a long throat so used COL = 3.40". This COL is still 0.06" off lands so it will tend to lower chamber pressure. You may not be able to reproduce this load that long in your rifle so BE CAREFUL!

Trajectory for this load is 0 yds = -1.9", 100 = +1.2", 200 = 0.0, 300 = -6.2". Which is only 0.8" lower than a 270 Wby at 300yds (if both sighted in at 200).

Use this link for powder charge and work up to maximum carefully.

Ray I am curious, you said for the tightest group and best accuracy you used 4350.

In how many 270's have you worked with and found this to be the case?

I am also kind of curious how many grains of 4350 you were pushing to get to 3025 with a 150. I would have to guess you were 55 or 56?

Also how long of a tube are you working with on the gun that went over 3 with the 150?

Mark, Its ONLY for my rifle that's why I put so many cautions in my post and did not post the powder charge. I believe getting a max round developed is very rifle specific. My intent was to only to get Magnum61 to put this powder on his "To Try" list.

CCI 200 LR primers are one of the tuffest I know and they show obvious flattening in my rifle. However, Bolt is still very easy to open and mic of fired cases are fine - So this is where I stopped. Also each of my powder charges were individually weighted. These kind of things are out of our inspection/control when others use a recipe we recommend so I never include powder charge and alway recommend starting low and working up to max. Do believe powder has a real good potiental in a 270 and should be tried.

Here's a look at grouping with this load at 400 yards:

I call/pulled that one to the right - The group should have been about 1" wide by 1.8" vertical but I still think it shows the accuracy I got with the 150 SGKs and IMR-4350 combination. The five shot average of 3,025 FPS was obtain from shots of: 3003, 3051, 3023, 3020 & 3027 on my chrono after having shot a PMC silver line of factory loads with 150 SGKs said to go 2,850 averaging 2,817 on my chrono.

Thanks for the info aside from uising R22 I've never been able to get a 150 at over 3K.

The 150 Sierra is one of my favs for accuracy and for long range shooting.

I appreciate your time.

Magnum61 - I use 56.0gr of AA3100 with the 150SptBt Sierra or a Nosler Partition for about 2860fps out of a 22" bbl of a 700C Rem. A load that gives me just over 2900fps in the same rifle is 57.5gr of RL19. Either are under max in most manuals and are very accurate in my rifle. Good luck - Mags

Sierra lists that RL22 wont shoot as fast as at the 4831's and 4350's. It seems that some are claiming otherwise in this thread. Is this common or is the book right for the most part?

The book is wrong, perhaps for that tube for whatever reason it would not. But there is no way that I would ever bet on the 4350's or the 4831's in keeping up with R22.
