I've got a Rem 700 BDL, with the factory 1-16" twist 22" barrel. I have 3 boxes of the old 275 grain Hornady round noses. I hear that the 1-16" barrels may or may not stabilize the heavy bullets. However, these old bullets only measure 1.2" in length. The 250 grain spire points that my rifle shoots well (Hornady, Speer, Partitions) measure closer to 1.3". Using the various online twist rate calculator, it seems that 1-16" is fine for the short 275's. Wondering if anyone has experience with this bullet's stability in Remington barrels. In addition, any load info would be appreciated.

Take them out to the range and shoot them at 100 yards the frist few shot well tell you if they work in your rifle or not.

Personally, if I were going to build one, I would specify a 1:12" twist. But, one of my main goals with any centerfire rifle I own over 25 caliber is to develop a cast bullet load that will shoot within 10-12% of the velocity of a similiar weight jacketed bullet. What the man said about shooting a magazine full at 100 yds is the only real test. Rich Buff Killer

I had a 35 Whelen for several years, great rifle, however it had a 1 in 16 twist and accuracy was less than stellar with longer 250gr bullets. It did OK with 250gr. NP's, but only with +P+ loads. If I were to build a 35 Whelen I'd have a 1 in 12 twist or at least a 1 in 14. I switched to a 9.3x62 and never looked back.

I have 3 35 whelens. A factory Rem. with 1-16,2 custom mausers ,one with 1-14, one with a stainless Douglas 1-12. They all shoot 250 Speer Hornady % Nosler very well, even the 1-16 Rem. The Rem. shoots the 275 Hornadys good at 100 yds. I have not shot them further than that. I save my 275-300 gr. for the 1-12, but if I only had the 1-16 Rem. I would shoot them in that. They showed no sign of keyholing at 100 yds. Since I would only use these for bear or bison up close I wouldn't worry about what they did at long range. The 250 gr. Partitions shoot very good in the Rem. & those should give all the penetration you need. My 250 gr. Speers has been complete pass throughs on the few deer & hogs I've shot. I plan on using 250 NP this fall for black bear. Good hunting.
