300 H&H vs. 30-06 vs. .338

In might sound crazy, but I've only recently come around to appreciating the 300 H&H for the fine cartridge that it is. Not only does it feed better than virtually any other centerfire hunting cartridge, but it's superbly accurate as a rule, and it burns considerably less powder than the bigger 300s to achieve an honest 3000 fps. or thereabouts with 180s -- plenty for just about any hunting anywhere.

Putting my money where my mouth is, I have a custom 300 H&H on order right now, and it'll make a fine running mate for my 375 H&H......

I own a Remington 721 and it's smooth for sure. You can hardly tell you just chambered a round and the extraction is great.
After I bought it I went to the store and saw $35/box Federals and that same day I became a reloader.

Yeah, it has a stamped metal floorplate/trigger guard and a $50 Unertl Hawk scope but my brother got his first deer with it, and I got my first badlands mulie... my dad also shot a nice whitetail with it too, so it's been the go-to, and I could never imagine selling it.

Only tried 180 grainers in it since they shoot so well, but I'm going to check out the 200s now...

My 300 is a 1939 mod-70-i load it to about 2950fps with either 180 partions or interlocks- shoots them to the exact poi-could go hotter actually a hot loaded 06 could probably do about as well--but it just shoots so good-feeds so smooth and it seems like its a lucky rifle-if you know what i mean.

Alf,
As opposed to passing on what you have read, get yourself a chronograph, a 300 Win, and a 300 H&H, thats what I did....

I found that with 150, 165 and 180 gr. bullets the 300 Win took a small but insugnificant lead, but with 200 gr. bullets in Factory and custom chambers I had to seat the bullets so deep that I could not use max loads with any powder that produced reasonable velocities as the powder space was restricted by bullet base having to be seated so deep...

Also try being a bit more polite, it makes for better discussions, and I won't reply with like critique.

It was about your sarcasm and wordy post! I don't care if the bullet is flat based or boattail the 300 Win does not perform with 200 and 220 gr. bullets, its at its best with 180 and below...

Thats my opinnion, based on my tests and chronograph testing of my 300 H&H rifle and my boys and another rifle in 300 Win....yours is based on what you have read or been told...

Its not worth arguing over, you will reply with some long winded rebuke and I will counter so lets agree to disagree and let it go, thats what I am going to do.

As rifle afficando's we like personal cartridges. As long as the rifle and ammo is made well many rounds will work.

My old M70 in 300 H&H is really heavy. As I type this I was thinking if I might carry it to a stand for opening day where the ranges are long.

I am going to pack the stuff for the range now. Maybe I will take the 300 H&H. Maybe not. It's so damm heavy and long.

Some suppliers of WW brass are out as none is being made this year. I got some from Lock Stock and Barrel and made up more from extra .375's.

I see this big old gun slipping into the seldom used safe.

The 300H&H belongs in a magnum mauser or Hagn with 26" tube for me, delictable!
However the .338 offers more to me,do everything the 300 will do,plus the ability to steam those 250,275,300gn slugs along,(375 teritory within reason) Plus I can fit it in a std. action with a neat and handy 23" tube for close in shots and thick terain and plus it has an ideal weight for steady offhand long shots. thumb
WEll the 06,you just cant kill it,sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it. Just does not seem to have the punch to get the best out of the premium 200 grainers at longer distances. That is not acriticism, for every cartridge has its limit. But maybe if we long throated the 06 same way R. Atkinson does his 7x57, we could wellbe surprised.
Its not a case of this vs that for me, rather what offers more versatility whilst maintaining effectiveness for intended use. For me its the .338win. Have thought about a wildcat.338/300H&H in recent times, in a magnum length action or single shot. Reckon we could really get some steam out of that, with the right throat.

Have a circa mid fifities M70 with a 26" barrel thats about 99%. Shoots factory RP 180's into 1" all day long. My 180 partition handloads at 2950 or the hotter load at 3050 both shoot under an inch at 100 and under 2" at 200 yds.
It feeds flawlessly and is one of those "classic" rifles and rounds you find yourself admiring when your afield with it.

WHY does it have to be better/faster than a .300 Win or whatever?? It's a great cartridge sometimes reffered to as the Super Thirty. I REALLY like that term, fits it well.

IMHO if a 180 gr .308" at 3000 fps isn't enough for the job move up to a .33 or the three seven five.

But most of all. Ten rounds look so cool in my beautiful Westley Richards leather cartridge slide. Makes me feel like I'm in British East Africa 70 or 80 years ago.

What is a reasonable price range for a pre-64 300 H&H with a peep-sight that shows a little honest use (but not abuse)?

I have a rebarreled M70 in .300 H&H and love it. I use a load of 65grns of RL22 behind a 200grn Partition and get 2850fps out of it. If you don't reload, both Federal and Winchester make factory ammo for it. The Federal is a 180grn Partion and the Winchester is a 180grn Failsafe.
