Guys,

Have a son coming back into the country in the next months. His next duty station is in California. What are his options for California legal autoloading rifles?

Did they blitz the M1A in the wisdom? How about the Socom16?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

The rule is, basically, if the rifle has a pistol grip then it can't have a "magazine which is detachable without the use of a tool".

So the SoCom / M1a series is just fine AS LONG AS they have a standard rifle grip.

Other alternatives include the Remington 7400 series autoloading rifles (many calibers to choose from), Browning BAR, and I think Winchester has one. M1 Carbine is ok, M1 Garand is ok. Ruger Mini-14 is ok.

AR15's are legal IF:

1. They must be an "off list lower" (aka, no Colt, DPMS, or other listed names).

2. They have no pistol grip (!)
or
3. IF they have a pistol grip the magazine must be pinned in place OR use a "bullet button"

IMO, your best resource for the info on Cali is Calguns.net

PS: I live in Orange County, CA. I've built two "off-list" lowers in the past year. No big deal once you know the rules.

PPS: 10-round mags. MAX. Don't screw around with this one. And no, you cannot "import" any "hi-caps" into Cali unless you are Law Enforcement and *I think* Active Military.

PPPS: Yeah, it sucks.

Regards,

Robert

rnovi,

Been looking through the stuff on the net. Found the assault weapons regs. Can an old M1A be brought in if it has had the flash hider replaced with a CA legal brake?

Can find no references to a Garand. They OK?

Can only find references to semi shotguns and shotguns with circular mags. How about a old Mossberg pump riot gun with a fixed stock?

How about bringing in handguns that are not on the current approved list? (Understanding that mags over 10 rds are a no-no.)

Thanks,

Mike

Not an attorney, but Garands are okay (I just got one from the CMP) and M1As are okay if they do not have illegal attachments - flash suppressors, etc.

Never heard of not having a pistol grip and detachable magazine. That's plain stupid.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Yes, also remember that 10 round or fewer magazines apply to rifles also (except tube fed 22 rimfires)

If you're son is active duty, he can get a letter from his command authorizing him to import and own an "assault weapon" Colt, DPMS etc. detachable magazine rifle with all the evil features that he wants. Have him get the letter from his CA command authorizing it and get the permit from the CA DOJ

Can find no references to a Garand. They OK?

Garands are fine. my brother collects them here in Cali.

Pump shotguns are fine as long as they hold 10 rounds or less. Semi-auto shotguns cannot have detachable magazines or pistol grips

If he is moving into CA he can bring in any off list pistols that he wants. He just has to register all the handguns with the Dept of justice (DOJ) within 60 days of moving into the State, as long as they're not assault weapons. (No handguns are allowed in with threaded barrels, barrel shrouds, forward handgrips and detachable magazine that insert in any location other than the pistol grip)

Thanks,

Go over to www.calguns.net and ask anything there, they have all the information in their FAQs
