I was interested in building a rifle in 280 Ross. What would be a good rifle to chamber this in. And what caliber barrel could be reamed out to meet the requirements of this chambering. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks yankees

KMG.
Man you really asking for it. The bore of the Ross is .287. There are no bullets availabel as fa as I know. Peaople have used .284 bullets but they don't shoot very good.

There is or was a source of factory ammo available in England. T%he case is poor design for modern powders. like the 303 it was loaded with Cordite an extruded powder injected into the case. You can make brass from 300H&H and leave the belt on also it is a rimless case the belt makes up the head size.

Have a look here on my web page there is some Ross history.

Might I suggest you rephrase to "it used cordite
in long sticks that are inserted into the case before the neck and shoulder are formed"

Which is how the 303Brit ammo used to be done...

The stuff looks like thin pasta... but tends to be more translucent, like Chinese rice noodles.

Woodleigh makes a .287" bullet designed for the 275 H&H Mag. Should work in the Ross if you don't mind being stuck with one brand two bullet-weight offering.

Alf,
I thought the Halger shared the .287-8" of the 280 Ross, 280 Jeff and 275 H&H Mag?

The good Messrs Halbe and Gerlich were on to something with this rifle when they pushed a 100 gr 7mm bullet at 3825 fps with this rifle on the 21st of December 1926. The 100 m velocity was 3600 fps. Later at the Berlin Hallensee test station the rifle clocked 3925 fps with the 100 gr Spitzer bullet.

If you want to push a 100gr bullet at 3800+ a 7mm Rem Mag and a 7mm Wby will do it at 65-67kpsi

The usable case vol of the Ross is less than the Wby and the same as the 7mmRem Mag.

To get the kind of velocity claimed with 1926 powders leaves one to wonder as of what pressures these loads produced.

With todays powder BL-C2 99% fill ratio in the Ross would generate 3859 ft MV @ 69.6kpsi. That is with 28" barrel.

Even the 1926 hunters were subject to dangerous sensationalism and a few hunters were killed by dangerous game in Africa using the 280 Halger or Ross rifle.

So why would anyone build a 280 Ross when a standard 7mm Rem Mag will do the same thing or or even do better.
