x2 91xlt. Doing the same. So far I'm thinking an all up weight of rifle and scope of 8 1/2 to 8 3/4 lbs 1 piece Williams floorplate in s/s, nice exibition grade walnut stock, s/s grip cap (not sure where to get this), quality s/s 24" barrel, inletted s/s swivel studs (not sure where to get these either) and I'm still trying to decide on open sights or not!!!

Cheers,
Mark.

Here are the three ways I would do it.

1. #5 Lilja 26 inches fluted, bead blast and NP3 finished. McMillan or MPI thumbhole stock, Jewell trigger, Sunny hill bottom metal for 5 round capacity, EAW mounts 3-12x56 Schmidt and Bender Zenith rail mount (with 8x40 screws).

2. 26 Lilja wrapped in carbon fiber by Christiansens of Utah. The rest same as above.

3. 22 inch #3 Lilja, muzzle break, NP3 finish, hidden floor plate, Jewell trigger, Talley ultra light rings, Kahles 3-9x42 1 inch scope, Bansner ultra light stock.

I like thumbholes, but they are not for everyone. They control recoil by putting recoil into the palm of your hand and the shoulder.

If you build it as a 6 pound rifle it will kick, you have to accept it. If recoil isn't your thing a thumbhole stock helps a lot, but weight helps more.

The 338 is one of my favorite calibers the others are 9.3x62, 9.3x62, 340 Weatherby, 35 Whelan, and 358 Norma.

I had a 6 pound scoped Remington Custom KS mountain rifle, and it had a KDF muzzle break on it. It wasn't enough weight and it kicked like a bastard with 250 grain bullets. My 8.5 pound 340 Weatherby is a pussycat comparitvly.

though i am going to do a synthetic stock...

we will see...right now prelim...changes only daily now, was changing hourly...lol

well, gotta make mind up REAL soon...just boxed up orig fact barrelled action, sending to smith in a.m.

My donor action is currently my 7mm Rem. Mag. that wears a HS stock. I'll have the walnut wittled down to something very classic with straight lines, no monte carlo !! and then put on the HS stock if I ever get to Canada again or Alaska where scabbards and rain do their thing.

Cheers,
Mark.

Well, just FYI, but Krieger happens to have in stock a SS barrel in 338 with a 10 twist that I was to purchase. They can turn it down to their minimum contour for you. Call and ask for Mike. Maybe they haven't sold it yet.

i would use a krieger 1 in 10 twist, ss bbl. imo the cut rifled bbls, such as kriegers, are less sensitive to changes in different bullets. mcmillan stock, inletted pachmyer sling swivels, they don't make any noise and don't tear up your rest bags. talley rings and mts. with a 2.5-8x leupold scope. bbl. length should be determined by your hunting conditions. i have one set-up for brush country with a 21" bbl. it cost me about 60 fps. with most bullet weights but at ranges under 200 yds. that's not important. i have mine magna-ported and like it very much. it cuts down on recoil yet isn't near as loud as a muzzle brake and doesn't throw up a dust cloud when shooting prone like muzzle brakes do. your gunsmith also might have some good suggestions. ps. i shoot mostly 250 nosler partitions and they just hammer elk and bears.

GUNNR-

That is a really nice all-weather set-up. What coating or metal finish did you use?

Great looking rig; from the photo's I really like the metal finish.

P.S. I'll bet you that TC1 (Terry) would really like that "swirly" color to your stock; he's into bowling ball colors these days animal

I'm the MAN. Big Grin You got a GREAT bbl.

They'll turn it to a #5, but I'd still have the riflesmith flute it for a little extra reduction in wt, and I have grown to like the looks of a good fluted bbl. They're a bit stiffer too.

Ditto! I like the whole set up , weight, scope etc.

I looked at the Mcmillan site but can't find the classic compact stock. Have they discontinued it?

91xlt, what stock are you going with? Would an Echols or a Supergrade pattern in edge tech. work?

Thanks for the comments. The coating on my rifle is Sniper Grey Dura Coat. Been using it for a couple years with good luck. I also coated the bore with UltraBore Coat and am more than happy with that. I have a 257 Wby with a Broughton tube and it wont copper foul w/TSX's @ 3670fps.You really have to love that.

Ha! I don't but if I did..I'd make you a deal on it..since Doc was so obliging in ordering your barrel!!

I've been talking with Mark Penrod a little about a rifle.

He says he's been using the Echols edge stock with a #3 Krieger barrel, BB bottom metal..and says the rifles are weighing about 7 3/4 lbs. I'm not sure what calibers though . We were talking about a 30-06.

sounds like a fine project...
i am bummed, thought ya had a stock...LMAO!

i am not going the lightweight route, i find that the light ones carry nice, but i cannot hold'em stedy...much rather have a med/med-hvy weight...imo

a 7-7.5lb or so 06 is about right though...

anyone have a win classic w/#5 bbl on it?...just curious as to finished weight, since we got talking about it...

Just a FWIW...since it was mentioned above somewhere.

Williams has discontinued the stainless one piece bottom metal.

So don't do what I did and order a McMillan stock inletted for their bottom metal expecting to use a stainless version.

Something like a 100% increase in raw material.

Since, IIRC, the stainless version was already $50 higher than the regular one, I may not have wanted to buy a stainless one if they had decided to keep making them.

Oh well, I guess.

Don't think they've discontinued the s/s floorplates, just behind in making them ATM. At least that's what they told me when I ordered mine a month ago. I'm told Nov./ Dec. delivery.

Cheers,
Mark.

I personally do not care for iron sights. If a rifle wears a scope, there's no need for any other sight system, IMO. Turns out to be just useless metal add-ons.

Arguably my best "run of the mill" rifle is a pre-64 M70 in .338 WM. It has a 24" Krieger cut rifled SS bbl, NECG irons, Leupold QR mounts, and a great trigger job. Metal has been black matte GunKote'd. It is set in a McMillan stock and currently is topped with a 3-9x40 MC Zeiss Conquest.

Weighs in at 8.5 pounds with sling. Would not hurt it to be a bit lighter.

Holds a 2" group at 300 yards with 225 gr Barnes X bullets when scoped.

(Has also been MagnaPort'd but that is not at all necessary. Was that way when I got it at the "right" price of $1200 almost 9 years ago.)

This one is a joy for me ... and has been just deadly on game.

That's without the scope, rings.....

I pretty much agree with Doc on the iron sights..I'd rather have a spare scope in rings ready to go...
