The Hornady fifth edition has data for a 170 grain bullet. I doubt that the newer editions have deleted it but one never knows

Here are some max loads from the fifth edition

H-4198.......27.3 grains
IMR-3031.....32.8 grains
H-4895.......35.5 grains
IMR-4064.....35.5 grains
IMR-4320.....36.9 grains
H-380........36.2 grains

All but the first and last load yield 2200 fPS and the two others yield 2100 fps

Jim,
I started with IMR 4320 back in the sixties. Over the years I switched to IMR4064 and IMR 3031 for accuracy. A few years back, I did some work with RL 7. It is not quite as accurate as 4064, but I get 100 fps more velocity with 28 grains in WW cases,in my 94 than I got out of the IMR powders. I've used Hornady and Speer for the last few years. Way back all I could get were Rem corelokts. Even used some Herters genuine northern guide bullets. I couldn't see any difference on deer that I shot. But most of my shooting is thirty to seventyfive yards.
The 32 Special is a great light recoiling cartridge. By the way, I've never seen one that wasn't a half decent shooter. None are target rifles, but even the ones with a worn bore still shot good enough for deer hunting.
Work up to the correct level in your rifle. My loads were safe in mine, but might not be in yours.

Here is Speer's data for your exact 170FN bullet, in a 20" barrel.

MAXIMUM LOADS
35.0/IMR 4895 = 2205 fps
34.0/IMR 3031 = 2201
36.0/W748 = 2197
36.0 IMR 4064 = 2174
25.5/IMR 4198 = 2062

Clearly there is very little difference in velocity between IMR 4895, IMR 3031 and W748.

BTW, these velocities exceed those listed for the .30-30 with 170s in the same Speer manual (#14) by almost 100 fps.
