Ovny- good deal, there. .270 will fill a multitude of needs. Do you hand-load? If so, you have a wide variety of bullets from which to choose, for everything from large rodents to elk.

Have fun with your new toy!

Hi I have a machine reloading Lyman Crusher II mono-station, so I would have to buy the 270 Winchester dies and brass, and bullets to reload. I have found that the 270 Winchester ammunition in Spain is not too expensive unlike other cartridges that bear the name magnum.

Regards and thanks,

Well in the end I chose a Santa Barbara but rifle caliber 300 Winchester Magnum because it ran very well priced and in Spain this cartridge is widespread and easy to find all kinds of tips for him. I leave some photos of the rifle.

Hey, sorry to bother again but I wonder if the length of the barrel of the rifle that I acquired (63 cms) is enough to get the benefits of the cartridge firing (300 Winchester Magnum). Just wanted to know that, thank you and have a good summer

Thanks for your comments, I am looking forward to fondle the rifle, what happens is that when I state official (police estamente) have to wait longer to receive the "guide of belonging" which is a document that enables you to possess a weapon. Spain is a country go completely retrograde in firearms. Never have you run your gun as to any legal problem you lose your entitlement to bear arms and the State intervenes weapons you possess and within a year without you again legalize guns are sold at public auction. Sure the money (which is usually very little in relation to what is usually paid on a gun) is given to you. It works on weapons Spain. Shame.

Certainly very nice. Most likely I will put the Santa Barbara that I bought a Nikon ProStaff viewer (my budget does not provide for much more) in 3-9x50 and see what mounts and rings will come in handy the rifle. What did you do with that Santa Barbara?

A 9-power setting with a 40mm lens will let you do everything that a 270 should be doing.

I hunted with a .270 for many years until I finally concluded that it was only a lightweight cousin of the .30/06. I also tried about every caliber between .25 and .35. Unless the game is big and mean or far, far away, the .30/06 is always the best choice.

I have many options for a hunting rifle. I tend to go back to the 270 Winchester more and more as I slowly recover from the infatuation with big, flat shooting, barrel burner, mule kicking, type cartridges.

My pedestrian 270 has killed more game than I can remember including Elk, Blacktail deer, Whitetail, Mule Deer, Antelope, Black bear, feral hogs and one Mountain Goat. I never felt that I or the game would have been better served with a 30-06.

Always a good choice...maybe.

ALWAYS the BEST choice...not.

The 30-06 cartridge do not like. Do not ask why; but I do not want it . To see how the 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge in the rifle behaves Santa Barbara because I feel that it is too light and the back of the head very high and just hit the face with the recoil.

I reported that the cartridge for which I have been chosen by the 300 Winchester Magnum . I for stalking deer (females) and roe (female ) I want to use tips Hornady SST 165 grains. I'm going to hunt females because it is much cheaper and because the male hunting a deer or deer even without homologous trophy is out of my budget.

Hi, as you know already own a rifle Santa Barbara with 24 inch barrel 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge. Surely I will never hunt or ram but no Ibex; Would it be appropriate to this rifle with good optics for hunting in the mountains as we are in Asia?

Thank you very much for the reply, I ask because I like to know the ballistic capabilities of cartridges that I have and good because I'm a bit heavy too. And in hunts sheep, ibex, etc ... in orographies such as areas where these species are hunted me and what I read in hunting webs 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge was little for me throw long distances that such animals are pulled, bending the balance towards more specific cartridges like the 300 Weatherby Mangum, 300 RUM Weatherby Magnum or 30-378. Was only known first-hand opinions of experienced hunters.

Thank you,

Ovny.

in the grand scheme of things, the 270 and 7rem are fantastic rounds, in their class, and both have done a good job of matching the leader in that class, the 7x64.

the 270, FAR ahead my choice between a 270 and 7remmag, is an excellent dual purpose case.

Use 1: an excellent north american cartridge, though I would be loathe to point at a large bear, it is fantastic for deer, elk, hogs, etc... and to a reloader, it can even be better

use 2: cut the case off at the shoulder, pour it full of lead, and have a great practice bullet for any .475 rifle.

your 300 win is a very capable rifle.

choose your bullets and velocity to match your game and run your loads up and down the ladder as needed.
it will work on everything from 100 pound deer up through animals as large as brown bears.
if you learn to cast your own bullets you can take the rifle down to shooting rabbits without much meat damage.
the only fault I have ever found with the
300 WM is the short neck length, and of course having a barrel long enough to take full advantage of the powder capacity.

What you need is a good rangefinder.
Over 300 meters the calibre will not help as much as knowing the EXACT distance.

At 600 yards a mistake in distance of 25 yards will cause any of the cartidges to miss a medium-sized animal.

Completely agree with you. Knowing the distance and meet weapon, cartridge and visor is essential for long-distance shot.

Ovny,
There isn't much difference in the .270, 30-06 or 7mm mag, and little difference in the 338 and 300 Win. They all perform very well on their intended targets. Anyone that thinks they can tell any difference in the field as to trajectory or killing power is delusional. Smiler

It's probably our most popular calibre here in New Zealand and with good reason: it gets the job done with a minimum of fuss for all of our introduced species of game.

It's popularity gets challenged a bit from the 7mm-08 and .308, mostly because now their is an increasing number of Hunters buying new rifles and getting supressors fitted. Due to our thick bush, many guys get their rifle barrels shortened down to 20 inches or less, so that they still have a short rifle with the suppressor fitted, and from talking to a few guys who reload the 7mm-08 and .308 are a bit more efficient in a short barrel than the .270

I personally prefer 7mm over the .270 due to the higher BC projectile designs. However, I have owned a couple of .270s in the past and I still have the highest respect for the cartridge.

My real question was the difference between the 300 WM and other 300 more intense as the Weatherby or RUM when hunting in the mountains and long distances. Like when sheep or ibex are hunted in areas such as mountains of Kazakhstan where an approach to the piece hunting is impossible and there to shoot long distances. I do not know if there's 300 WM arrives.

Ovny
