I'll need to develop a load for solids for the 9.3X62 for my first safari next year. What brands of solids are available in 9.3? Any recommendations?

I have 2 boxes of Barnes 286 gr Solids in stock.
I believe they are going to start replacing all their solids with Banded Solids which are like the Triple-Shoks in that they have the three grooves cut in them.

Barnes (286gr); Woodleigh (286 and 320gr) and A-Square - if you can find them - (286gr). There are probably more out there Smiler

Can't help with a recommendation as I didn't take any on my Zimbabwe trip in '02 but wish that I had. Even if you are just hunting plains game, it would be a good idea to have a handfull just in case.

I get about 2300 fps with the 320 gr. Woodleighs with RL-15. This gives a Penetration Index of about 94, which is probably good enough, as folks have used it for buff, but I have only used it on paper!

I do not know what you plan to do with them but the .375 350 gr. solid at 2400 fps gives a PI of about 119.

If you are buffalo hunting a good soft is better, like a 300 gr. Swift, than any solid. I get about 2400 fps with them. Shot placement!!

I have some 286 gr. Northfork solids and some cup points, but they may not be in production as yet...

If you can get 2300 then the 320gr. Woodlieghs kill buffalo pretty good..I get a bit more in my 26" barrel..

I would use a Northfork or Woodleigh soft for the first shot and 286 gr. solids to follow up...

I have used the 9.3x62 on buff but I still prefer a 416 or 404...same said for the .375, they are great calibers, but the 416 suits me better, one might charge! Eeker

If I go for buff, I'll take the 416. Current thinking is plains game. I'll take a 375 and my 9.3 X 62. Figured I'd have some solids for both. Might do hippo - who knows.

I ordered some 416 North Forks today and asked Mike about the 9.3 Solids. He hasn't started production yet - in fact, he said I was the first to ask about them. Ok, you 9.3 folks - let's nag Mike so he'll make some! Wink

Actually I sent an email on May 29 and he replied that he intended to look at it. I have no urgent need and did not press him to make some up. I have a box of the GS Custom 270 grain FN sitting around if I get the urge to set up the reloading press and put some solids together.

Need to urge him on the cup point in that caliber, they would be your best bet for a buffalo bullet ever...

You need a solid or cup point for shooting buff with 9.3x62 if you have that option as it will make two holes...softs will not, but if I had to use a RN then I would want a soft on top...

In the advent of a cup point, that is the only bullet I will use in the 9.3s for buffalo...

Atlers,
I am working up solids for a July trip to Tanz and have used the 286 Barnes solid and 286 Woodleigh. I have gotten 2400 fps out of both in my rifle with quantities of Varget. The Woodleigh got the nod because of better accuracy. It will put three inside an inch at 100 yards and two inside a half inch at 50. Zeroed for 100yds, it will not rise more than an inch between 25 and 100yds. It will be within an inch to 125yds. Kudude

Kudude, what barrel length are you using? Are those velocities consistent with the softs you're shooting? What kinda accuracy were you getting from the Barnes?
