I picked this up yesterday. It's not in the best condition, but the bore seems nice, and it will hunt. It's in 9.3x62, made in '39, 650mm long barrel with fairly light contour.

Trying out image box. It looks like it crops my pics, so the butt and muzzle are not visible. It has an added Silvers pad and a cross bolt. I found this rifle with a private seller before I started the Type A thread, but had to put the $ together. I hear the Type A is not real common in 9.3x62 (Type A's are not common, in general). Anyone have any idea how many were made in this caliber? While this rifle is all matching, it doesn't have have any cool retail provenance on the barrel, like Heyer or Manton. I don't care, really, but that would have been cool. It doesn't have "Germany" stamped on the floorplate, like many export commercial Oberndorf's do.

I like my rifles a buy a bit used as long as they have not been abused.

Then one can use them with out being afraid.

Plus if they look a bit ugly they are cheaper and still get the job done.

On my iPad, if you tap the small pictures, they will enlarge and show the entire rifle.

Thank you all for the compliments. I've had one of these in the back of my mind ever since Bob Faucett first posted pics of his "Osa Johnson" rifle back in '08. Like others have already said, I won't be afraid to hunt with this rifle.

Matt, that one would be worth restoring...they're quite pricey.

Super find!
Don't restore it, just hunt with it and enjoy it. Then post pics of it with game.

The closest thing I have is a 1929 vintage Husqvarna Model 46 in 9.3x57. It's probably the best pointing rifle I have. Rear sight is like a single leaf express sight, no cheekpiece on the stock but it has a very narrow comb plus some cast off for a right hand shooter so it aligns my eye perfectly with the sights. It's an earlier Mauser design so the bolt cocks on closing, but I have come to like it.

Those 46 and 146's are sweet! I love their open grips. They don't point for me quite as well as my type A, but they point well. The 1640's with the straight comb point better for me than any rifle I've ever shouldered.

Very nice rifle Matt. You mentioned it has a slender barrel, what is the muzzel diameter at 650mm?

It is .588" just behind the front sight base, which is about 15mm.

Sweet, yes indeed. Wish I had found one in my 20's. Still would do decent work with a red dot sight.

Great find! I have always been intrigued by the 9.3 x 62. You never see them in this area. I settled for a 35 Whelan

Absolutely! But, I've never tried a Mauser sporter like the wonderful one you pictured.

Never tried a 146 or type A, in fact never saw one, but if they pointed any better than my 46 they would be fantastic. The little 46 comes up and shoulders more like a nice well fitted sxs double gun, sights line up to my eye perfectly. With my 72 year old eyes it's not my most accurate rifle, but the best handling one.

I'd agree with the stipulation that the M46 and M46A are the best pointing Factory Rifles I've owned and shot. Got my first M46 from an AR member out of Kerrville, TX. My eyes are not as old as yours but bad enough, still, amazingly, I can shoot honest 1.5 MOA or better groups with it at 100 yds.
