Anyone had any experience with a 338 Taylor? I know you need custom dies but what do you use to form the brass? Thanks for any input. mrmit

Third hand Info from Cabelas: The .338 Taylor will require hand loading all your own ammo, unless you send the gun to Superior Ammo, and have them develop and load ammo for you. RCBS reloading dies and brass are included with the gun. The shell is a necked up .300 H&H magnum shell, shortened 1/4", and blown out, with a sharp shoulder, a la the Ackley Improved cartridges. It has more case capacity than the Winchester .338 Magnum, and is enough for any North American game. Chatfield Taylor used the .338 Win case for most, if not all of his Wildcats, as far as I know. The Chatfield-Taylor is the 375 Taylor, the 416 Taylor, both of which are simply necked up .338 Win. cases Other cartridges on the .338 Win. case are the 30-338, 9.3x338, and up and down for most available calibers.. I had a 338/300 H&H,some years ago, and at some point I did blow the shoulder out on it to make it an Imp. version, but was not aware of the above mentioned version by that name, but I'm sure it exist. Wildcatters have about flushed the pot on every imaginable wildcat there is or could be and many adopted their names to them.... The 338/300 H&H has no real benifit today and has a number of reason not to use it, such as streatched cases. All the minuses of the old 300 H&H. Tt would be better suited to neck the 300 H&H up to a 375 H&H IMO. BTW, my post is not ment to discriminate on the 300 H&H as it is one of my all time favorite calibers and I choose long ago to deal with the problems of the case design, and it is manageable with proper reloading practices. In reality its nostalgic to some extent, However, properly handloaded it will walk on the heels of a 300 Wby. in that I shoot 200 gr. Noslers and Woodleighs at 3000 FPS...Its still a fine old caliber, but no better or worse than the 300 Win. Mag. As to a balistically superior .338, I can't imagine any better than the standard .338 Win. it just about has it all IMO> Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
