I am way behind the power curve getting ready for Africa in May. I have not been to the range in two months between my schedule and the range being closed for improvements. (And it sure looks good!)

To keep things simple, I plan to take the same rifles I took last year, a 30-338 and 9.3x62, both made by Walt Sherman, who makes a fine shooting rifle.

Anyway, the first group from the 9.3 punched out a rough hole at 100yds with 250BT's. I took it over to the 200/300 range to see where it was shooting. The first two shots at two hundred are touching, but high. (All shootings is over bags, hand held.) I dropped the sights what I thought would be an inch, but group two was a low as group one was high, although about 1.5" inches apart. I adjusted up one half the adjustment I had made, and fired again. My first shot was about the same level as group two, but to the left. (I don't know whether the adjustment didn't take or I did not do my part.) My second shot was a clean break, with the cross hair right in the center of the target dot. The bullet went thru that little black diamond in the middle of the two inch target dot. I guestimated my hyperelevation at 300, and found that using the lower vertical post of my duplex cross hair puts them about two-three inches high at 300.

Every shot fired at 300 yds was in a 15" cardboard octagon, on a line 3" above the target dot, two were six inches to the right, within three inches of one another, blown there by a good 25-30 mph wind. The other was to the left right where I aimed it, but the wind stopped blowing for that shot!

I just love this rifle. It shoots every bullet, every weight tight as a tick. I have shot Nosler 286 Partitions, Lapau 286 RN, Speer 270 semi spitzers, Barnes 286 solids, and Woodleighs SPs-all of them just as tight as you could want, none of them bad. I don't have a 26" barrel like Ray, but a 22" Montana Rifle Works barrel in a heavy contour, but I get right at 2600fps with the 250s, about 2500fps with 270 and 2400fps with 286s. My powder of choice is H4895.

With the heavy contour the rifle weighs with scope about 10+ pounds; however, you really don't notice the recoil when shooting it, and it is well balanced. It has a syn stock, black matte finish, and a Weaver Classic 3x9. It is a utilitarian beauty, a real keeper, and surefire killer.

Sorry for all the words, but I just had to crow to folks who can appreciate the joy of it. Ku-dude

Ku-dude,

Sounds like a great shooting rifle. I recently got a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 and have just started to work up loads for it. I will have to try H4895 since you are getting such good results with it.

I get that same feeling every time I take mine out also.don`t get too many one holers, but plenty under 1" for 5 shots.we don`t have anywhere local to shoot much over 250 yds,but it`s still a lot of fun, when I get downstate to my old stomping grounds we can do up to 600 yds.the gallon milk jugs still explode at 500 with my speer 250`s and 270`s,but at anything over 500 they just poke holes, and we thought we were missing the jugs till we walked out and looked.mine has the 26" heave barrel.not a walking rifle, but with the sitting harris bipod and vari-x 111 2.5x8 sitting is just fine.keep up those fine groups.mine really loves the barnes 250gr x`s.
