Does anyone out there have a facination with the 220 gr. bullet out of a 3006? I think as need to my reloading curiosity I'm going to give em a try. I do think they are a little much for deer and should be deadly on elk. I'm going to try to work up a 200 yd load, any suggestions as to powders and what may have worked for you?

Used Nosler Partitions and just a plain old middle of the range book load of IMR4350. Was very successful on everything I have used it on in Africa up thru Wildebeest.

I have always been facinated with the 220 gr bullet both in the 30-06 and the 300 Mag.

I've pretty much used them all and the 220 Partition and the 220 Sierra are the best on game.

If you are working on a 200 yard load, then the semi-pointed Nosler should work the best.

I've always had good luck with them... the 220 Sierras or Hornady's work just fine...

they haven't been fussy in my 06s...

I load them with a variety of powders, with MV from 2400 to 2600 fps.. and they have always been accurate...

they also drop anything I ever shoot them with..on the spot...

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him "Why do you carry a 45?" The Ranger responded, "Because they don't make a 46."

I used the 220 grain Partition in Africa in 2004 with perfect results. One shot kills on Kudu, Wildebeest, Blesbok, Zebra, and Steenbok, from 40yards to 220 yards in the Bushveld. I could not have been more pleased. The .30-06 is going back to Africa in 2010 with more 220 grain Partitions, and maybe some 180s for the little guys. Used an ancient Lyman recipe of 51.0 grains of IMR 4350, which clocks at 2250 fps out of my old Mannlicher-Schoenauer MCA rifle. Maybe a little slow, so I expect to speed the load up somewhat over the coming year. Federal quotes 2500 fps for their 220 grain load.

The new Winchester Supreme 780 powder (max load of 58 grains) should get you about 2,500 FPS if you have a modern bolt gun.....Pressure about 60,000 PSI so work up.

FWIW I'd far rather shoot a 200 grain A-Frame at 2,700......a bit better trajectory due to pointed bullet and better velocity and at least as much penetration.

Stay with the 220's on the little ones too. Those lighter bullets will blow them in half.

Well I have a couple pounds of H414 and IMR 4831 so I'm going to start there. I'm looking to the Noslers for the projectile. Mind you this is just reloaders play as I'm not planning an African trip anytime soon. Dreaming of one though. The biggest critter around here are elk. I love hearing the stories so keep em coming.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I know some folks in Hasfway, Oregon who have some bison they need thinned out. My daughter, son-in-law, and I each shot one in August and not only are they the ultimate excuse for the loads you are playing with they are great at the table too. Have fun working up your loads and think about properly testing them. It is a lot of fun.

I shoot 220s out of my scout rilfe a 18.5 in 03 just because I had two boxs of them 1 box of rems other of hornaday. They both shoot to the same point of aim. I get 2250 out of the 18.5 and 2450 out of a 22 in.

I belive I used wcc852 to load them with I would have to check as I loaded them all up and haven't had to load any for a while.

I have shot a bear, several hogs and deer with them they all died.

Well I buy more when the last of these are shot up. The jury is still out on that one. But then if I just use the for hunting it well be a while I have about 60 loaded rounds left.

I think the 220 nosler would be the way to go , they have a jacket which is thinner than the 200 gn nosler so expansion would noteven be an issue on really light animals up to 200-250 yards,.... your best powders for the 220 are R22 and NORMA MRP.....with R22 you can get 2550-2600 and that is one good load i recentley had the 220 nosler and 240 gn woodleigh pressure tested with these two powders....use the slower double based powders for best results

That is what I do, actually 3.5 inches high at one hundred..

zero it for 100 yds, then raise your elevation on your scope 12 clicks...

it will then be 3 inches high at 100 yds....

or was that I trick question that I missed?

Thanks guys you all have been helpful.
My buddy has my rifle until he gets his elk. Its tough have a loved one out of the house but my buds .300 Savage decided to break a week before the hunt. He is shooting a very accurate and sedate 180 gr. Corlokt. at 2700 fps propelled by 54gr. H414. Hpoe he has elk steaks waiting for me. The price you gotta pay.
