Phil,

What bullet would you recommend for Alaska? I imagine a 286 gr of some sort would get the nod for the larger stuff, but would you load up a 250 gr. bullet for longer range shots? Or just go with one bullet for everything?

hunting bears is not a long range affair and I have always used the 286 gr bullets but if one wanted to hunt sheep I suppose the 250gr bullets would offer a bit better trajectory.

Thanks, your opinion carries a lot of weight.

If I'm remembering correctly the guy who shot that record book sheep way back when did it with a .404 Jeffery. That doesn't make much sense outside of the context of him probably wanting to be prepared in case a grizzly showed up. Or maybe he just wanted to use that rifle? I don't think of a .404 Jeffery as a sheep rifle, but since it shot the record book sheep I guess it's proven that it is...

Whenever I go to the Arctic, the lightest gun I'll carry is a .375. When in griz country, carry a griz rifle. A .404 wouldn't strike me as excessive, at all.

I got my 9.3x62 yesterday from the factory, the first one had a bad chamber...It was worth the trouble as this one is a true half inch gun (3shots)....

I have built a lot of custom 9.3x62s for myself and they all get sold pronto..so I bought myself the new Ruger Hawkeye African and its the nicest factory rifle I have seen yet, it has all the bells and whistles and the blue job is out of this world..Its much better than the blue on my Ruger Hawkeye African in .338 caliber as the .338 has a bead blast barrel, but its a heck of a nice gun..I'm going to sell the .338 as they are just too close together in power to have both..

Phil,
Nice 9.3x62s I'd kill for both of them, but the Rem or Enfild manlicher really caught my eye, My 404 is a Rem 30-S with quarter rib and all the bells and whistle, except I kept the Rem safety...I broke down and m working gun just got a custom stock on it..I should have it fineished within the month..looks much like the lower gun in your picture.

I had to take my 9.3x62 blaser to azerbaijan on a tur hunt because my 300 barrel didn't turn up in time. I used 232grn norma oryx projectiles and with a dial up scope shot my tur at over 400m. Its not what i really wanted to use the calibre for but hell it worked Big Grin

Toyed with the idea of a 93.62 for a long time. Finally pulled the trigger (no pun) the other day. Gonna have JES rebore and rechamber a Rem 700 30-06 to 9.3x62 so I can get a taste.

In the long run, the CZ 550 Carbine and Sako Black Bear in 9.3x62 are appealing.

Had my custom Pre 64 M70 put together last year and it's an absolute joy to own and shoot. Both 250 Accubonds and 286 Partitions will shoot sub MOA and much better for me. I'm now starting to play with one of Veral Smith's 170 gr cast bullet molds.

My 9.3x62 everyday carrying rifle
At 6 pounds 14 oz it goes everywhere and is popular as a camp loaner with the guides

Phil,

What metal finish did you use? Any issues for "wish I had" chosen another metal finish?

I wish I knew what all the metal finishes are as it is an ongoing test of various finishes. When D'Arcy Echols fitted the stock he asked if he could also refinish the rifle to test the various claims of protection offered by different coatings.
It is a stainless barrel and I think it is cerecoat or something like that and it is showing some scratches but looks fine. On the action he cold blued some parts and I think rust blued others and I have no idea of what else he did. But it sure has held up well.

Nice rifles! Here's mine. It's a 1909 Argentine M98. I love the rifle cartridge and love the history behind it. After reading about why it was invented I knew I had to have one and it HAD to be on a M98 action.

When if comes to the 9.3x62 and it's history, I have a theory.

Otto Bock, the inventer of the 9.3x62 developed it in 1905; right? I wonder if Bock took the 30-03, which preceded the 30-06, and simply blew out the shoulder and neck diameter to it's current x62mm dimension.

Comments?

Phil,

Having heard a thing or two from Daniel (M98), I picked up some Corrosion X lubricant. I also received an email reply from D'Arcy Echols about your rifles finish.

I asked if he remembered how your rifle was finished.

"Not really as I can't remember the exact details as this was done awhile ago. The Action, bolt sleeve and magazine box were caustic blued i'm pretty sure, bolt and extractor were rust blued, barrel trigger bow and floor-plate was Cerakoted. All this proves is if the metal is maintained there is no real need a "super finish". I took a similar rifle on a sheep hunt in the Yukon the action was polished and in the white, barrel blued, floor plate in the white, etc. It was subjected to fair amount of rain, snow, horse sweat and my sweat. I wiped it down before bed and when I crawled out the tent in the morning. A layer of minor rust was beginning under the stock line where I could not wipe off the moisture after 12 days. However everything looked fine when I got home. There were 2 other hunters in camp with me. One with a rifle that was coated with Black Teflon and the other a similar type coating that the owner could not recall by name. By the end of the hunt both of their rifles were rusting badly. Did their coating fail ? More than likely they never bothered to wipe them down as they were "super finished ". BIG MISTAKE. I used Corrosion X on that hunt and have ever since, Phil turned me onto this oil and I'm sure he uses it on the 9.3 as well as everything else in camp, likely smears it on his eggs as well.
If you take care of your kit it will take care of you."

So Phil,

How's Corrosion X taste on your eggs? rotflmo
