Ok, so I am reading alot from guys like Atkinson and some of the Africa hunters about how great of a cartridge the 9.3X62 is. As a real life rifle loonie and oddball cartridge enthusiast I am entrigued. With the .366" boolits and the lightest I could find at 250 gr. it is a bit much for Minnesota whitetail but that would not be the heaviest thing I ever launched at a deer. I am thinking about a markX mauser or an 03A3 and the needle would be pegging past the red on the on cool rifle meter.

Don't sweat the bullets; I've taken several whitetails and even a couple of pronghorn does that couldn't have been more than 90lbs live weight - all with the 286 NPs. The bullets have performed perfectly.

I bought a bunch of 250gr bullets thinking I'd want lighter bullets for some game, but I'm completely sold on the 286 Partitions for everything.

I'm surprised Nosler or Barnes hasn't come out with a 200-225 grain projectile.

Nosler is introducing a 35 caliber 200 Accubond and Barnes has a 180 and 200 TTSX in 35 caliber. With the 9.3 just slightly larger, one of these firms should come out with a light 9.3 bullet.

If you shoot a big or little whitetail with a 9.3x62 286 gr. Nosler you won't get much bloodshot meat, you will get a nickel size hole and he will run probably 25 to 50 yards or drop at the shot, if he runs he will leave a blood trail a blind man can follow...If you shoot him with a 320 Woodleigh it won't expand much at all will sometimes leave a caliber size hole and he may run 75 yards and you can eat to the hole. If you shoot one with a 270 Gr. Speer is may well blow him in half on ocassion because the bullet is so soft, but of course that depends on how fast you shoot it..Some tell me its the berries for deer, guess they load milder than I do, not surprising!

I love the 9.3x62. It hits like a 375 and kicks like a 30-06, I have used it in N. America on Nilgai and axis. I have taken African plains game with it up to the size of Giraffe, and even shot a few pigs with it.

As said in a post above do not worry with bullets-- there are plenty from Nosler, PRVI, Woodleigh,hornady and others. Get one and enjoy.

As the others have said, do not worry about whacking a deer with the bullets available. They work great, with a minimum of meat destruction, and usually, a minimum of tracking needed. They also work well on Mn whitetails. I know from experiance.

norma makes a 232 gr. bullet

RWS also loads a 225.

There is a 10 gram projectile in 9.3 made by lutz moeller and it's great

I load it all the way up to 325 grain so it covers everything I need

There is no need for a 30-06 at all

One barrel and caliber hunts 99% of criters

Midways sells the Norma Vulcan at 232 grains.

That said, the Prvi 286 is great on whitetail as it is not as heavily constructed as others but still doesn't ruin meat.

With my 9,4x74R I have taken coyotes to cape buffalo with 286gr Nosler Partitions, and the 286gr Woodleigh Softs.

I have also shot several deer and wild pigs with the 270 Speer at 2490 fps and it has performed perfectly.

Actually, a 250 grain bullet works great on deer. Mule deer, whitetail and even black bear. The only bullet I've used on game is the 250 Nosler BT. I only have about a box and a half left and will go to the Accubond when I run out of them. I have a slew of other weights on the reloading bench, but so far have only shot game with the 250 Nosler.

9,3x62 just works.

May not be sexy or overly cool ... but it just works. I've taken two to Africa on separate trips and each performed superbly well.

Is my go to gun for piggies. Have more DRTs on deer with it than anything else I use. Does not excessively damage meat.

I've enjoyed quite a few kills (including quite a few DG) with the 9.3x62 and have just returned from a Pig hunting trip where I used the GECO 255grn (subsidiary of RWS) soft nose ammunition.
Its well priced with good components and great on pig sized game with good shock value for moving game.

Andrew of MAGNUM SPORTS Sydney has it for $123 per 50.

I have shot some Roe deer(45-60 lbs live weight) with 9.3x62 and 285 grain Norma Oryx and got very little meat damage on all of them.
Much less than with a 223.
So don't worry about the meat damage when using it

Definitely the Mark X.

Put a mannlicher style stock on it and the Cool meter needle will break off.

Think twice before you build a 9.3...

I have never owned a 35 Whelen, but have owned 358 Winchesters, and still have one. I personally have never felt the need, or wanted to shoot pistol bullets in my 358. I am sure others differ on this, but for me it is not a selling point. If you want a 9.3X62, get one, if you want a 35 Whelen, get one of those. Rather than one having much of an argueable difference, the main difference is just personal preference.

On the other hand.
I'm always picking up .375 bullets, cheap, at gunshows.
They resize very well to 9.3 size. So I have 235, 270, and 300 grain to play with Cheap.
Partition bullets are a pain to resize, don't bother.

I should think so!

It's possible,
But I have to chuck them up in the mini lathe and drill a tiny hole through the bottom past the partition.
That space gives the material some where to go when you resize.
It's just a pain.

What equipment are you using to resize .375 to .366?

I owned a cz550 9.3x62 and regret selling it, that rifle would be VERY nice !! I say get it, Nomra make a 232 gr pill I think.

Thanks for starting this post it really hits home with where I'm at with my 9.3x62 situation. I recently purchased a 9.3x62mm Ruger Express rifle conversion done by Jim Dubell who also converted my 375 into a 500 Jeffery. I recently took my 9.3 deer hunting and ended up swaping it for my 300 RUM when I found myself glassing for deer at 300yards +. The animals were spooked by the cougar and wolf reintroduction and I really could not get in very close. YES I agree the 9.3 is great for 200 yards and under but I get a little uncomfortable considering a 300 yard shot if necessary (rare but possible in NE Oregon). More power to the 9.3 since I may part with my 375 H&H since if I need more I will use my 416 Rigby. I think that given its history and effectiveness this would make a much better larger caliber choice for those who want a bigger bullet but don't want more recoil.

Graeme Forbes [Forbes Wholesale] brings it in, along with the RWS ammo etc.

I think the 9.3 has replaced the 45-70 as the Magic Cartridge of AR. Its been recommended as as dg cartridge and a whitetail steak maker. A fellow Alaskan AR member sold my second one to me a couple of years ago and recently noted he was in the process of building another one for himself since he missed the one he sent me. I've used the cartridge twice on moose and have been very pleased. Bullet weights between 232 and 320grain? Now thats a range.

I have a .375 I like and have used quite a bit but would be hard pressed to keep it if I had to choose between it or the 9.3. I also own .458's and a 30-06 so the heavy and light end of the spectrums are covered. In November I used the -06 on a nice mulie but as the range was about 180 yds, the 9.3 certainly would have delivered assuming I'd have done the same good shooting.

Two fall's ago I went out locally and found this fellow in the midst of 9 cows.

A 286g Partition driven by a healthy load of R-15 tumbled him in place at a range of again about 180 yards and required no follow up shooting. I can find no short comings of this cartridge.

To resize 375 to 366 I use 2 push through sizing dies in 370 and 366.
There is a tiny bit of spring back so they end up about a 367.
Really very easy.

I've done thousands of them with my draw die, but it does loosen the cores, and some rifles don't like this at all.

Also, with the cores now loosened, i wouldn't use the resized bullets on DG.

The 9.3x62 is a true classic and is about as useful an all around rifle as anything made.
The 350 Rigby was it's early contemporary but unfortunately it has about faded away.

Both make fantastic rifles for Alaskan big game
