RaySendero, I had thought about swapping out the vintage Weaver KV for more modern optics, but have pretty well decided to leave the rifle just as it was in '57. I'm hoping the weather will hold out long enough this weekend that I can get out and shoot it.

I've got a few factory 180gr Silvertips and am going to buy a box of 180gr Failsafe's to see if they shoot half as well for me as they have for others. I know it's overkill, if there is such a thing, but once I get this rifle shootin' straight, it's going on a coyote calling expedition. I can't hunt any big game now until next year....bummer

Great rifle, congratulations! My 300H&H is approx. 1960.

Recoil? All three of my PH's kids shot my 300 H&H at the range with full house loads (180 grn @ 3,000fps and 220 grain @ 2,700fps). His two girls are 8 & 12 years old and his son is 14. They all smiled and laughed after shooting it. The kids, like the animals, must be tougher in Africa!

That really is a great rifle. And, there's nothing wrong with the scope either, so long as it is in good shape.

The Weaver KV is quite useable. I still have two of them from back when they were new. Although they are not as bright as some of the newer scopes, they are at least as sturdy. Further, they may well be all you need. After all, if one can see well enough to find and hit their target, how much more do they need?

One can compare the old scopes with the new from the same vantage point as comparing typical older houses with newer ones...many of us born in the '30s were raised in homes which even with 3 bedrooms didn't much exceed 1,000 Sq. ft. My 2 sisters & I, for instance, grew up in a home with
only 1,020 sq. ft. It served us just fine. Nowadays, I'm not sure anyone even builds a home that small, and all the young folk seem to want more like 2,200 sq. ft., minimum.

Well, if person has nothing else to do with their money, that's fine. But, sometimes I suspect today's generation would be better off with 1,000 sq. ft. and less mortgage debt. Likewise, I suspect a lot of shooters would be better off with a good used K-V, while spending their money on more ammo. That way they could really learn to shoot and maybe be a little ahead of the game...

Way to go Buster!

If I were you I think I'd keep it 1957 vintage. If you can stand a longer length of pull - One of the leather lace-up recoil pads with some red oak stain on it will look like it was bought with the rifle.

H'mmm, didn't know there _was_ a season on _them_.

I agree with your feelings re M70, however: I inherited a 1952 M70 (.270) from my father. I would part with it to save the world from destruction...maybe. Difference is it _has_ been _well_ used.
