Well H-Mantel in 8x68S is a real killer but a brutal cobination on small game!

But for long distance hunting not so bad!

iam waiting for a custom Shultz and Larsen, one of the good old models in .358 norma magnum. i want an cartridge that that can go from 270 win with one load to 375 hh with a nother, i can also use 180 bullets for 357 magnum to practice withand 200 grs, just ordered some sierras 225 grs and 200 grs remington core-lokt they are for the 350 rem mag,, 225 or 250 grs for allround use up to 275,grs,280 grs and 310 woddleigh for close combat against big game.

Iam norwegian and there is a enthusiasts group who use that and others like the 9,3x64 as well, i`ll probably get a 9,3x64 or 9,3x70 one day, but this is a Nordic classic, and with the bullets of today, its a great round which iam looking forward to use.

I am looking for a calilber that can be used for the european "big game" as well as most game in Africa (excluding buffalo and above).
I am reloading my own cartridges so components are also an issue.
I have my eye on a Mauser 03 or Schultz & Larsen. (Any other suggestions) ofcourse I have to consult my wallet as I do not have "unlimited" funds.
Hope you can give me some advice / suggestions.
I am now using a 6.5 x 55 for scandinavian game (not Elk & Moose).

For what you want, you will still be well served by your 6.5X55, or if you want to go larger, a 7X57mm. With the right bullets, (like the 175-grain Nosler Partition) either is adequate for all the world's non-dangerous game.

Don't forget, many hundreds of elephant have fallen to the 7X57mm, and quite a few more to the puny 6.5X54mm Mannlicher/Schoenauer!

The usual, trite and proven choices:

8x68
9,3x62
9,3x64

And a ton of less common cartridges...

I totally agree. these 3 are all awesome choices.

Wow Atomic, you resurrected and old one!

So maybe we should ask what was eventually built?! Smiler

Anyway, still nice to consider... How about the 7x64 if you're after the medium antelope? It's got a lot more legs than the 7x57, which is a bit anemic when the range starts increasing. I don't really care what the guys hunted with the 256 (6.5x54) and 275 (7x57) class of rifles, we all know they aren't appropriate for really large and DG.

For me then...

7x64 (anything up to gemsbuck or kudu at the top end)
8x68 (if you're after mostly things the size of kudu, gemsbuck and BWB etc. and potentially Eland at the max)
9.3x62 (for the larger bushveld species like kudu, BWB, Eland all if the range is fairly short and even for buffalo)
9.3x64 (as above with a bit more legs and the ability to go with a heavier bullet weight if you intend to hunt buffalo and other DG)

All depends on what you are after! Have fun choosing. I'd build something on a M98. Maybe on a VZ24 action.

The 9.3 is a legal minimum for DG in several, but not all African countries, so bear that in mind if this is important to your selection.

If ammo availability is important to you, of these, the 9.3x62 is by far the most available anywhere in the world you go. It is also good for all North American or European game and all African plains game except Giraffe.

Being that you reside in Scandinavia, I would look for a vintage Brno 9.3x62.

Do you have and old or brand spanking new S&L in mind?

The original company went belly up in the mid '80's. They bought recievers from Husquarna and FN, and they never made any themselfs (as far as i know!).

The new firm makes their own recievers, and heres a list of calibers:

BTW Kongsberg in Norway makes custom guns at a wery fair price!

Unfortunatly they dont seem to have a www so here's a page with a phone number to them:

Why is the 8X57 never mentioned? I know it carries the stigma in the US from being loaded so anemically by the factories but why wouldn't it be considered by Europeans? Or is it just too "plain Jane" to be considered?

I would go with 8x60S or with 9,3x64 Brenneke.
However the 9,3 is more common here in Europe.
