That 200 gr RN is too soft for Pigs, use the 250 gr instead.

Quote: Hey Jeff, 1. Yes indeed. And he may find their accuracy difficult to beat. Unless they have changed it, that particular Hornady 200gr RN is a 2-diameter design. They are typically extremely accurate, shoot with less pressure than 1-diameter designs and have the potential to go slightly faster than 1-diameter bullets. If he decides to change to a different bullet(of any knd including those of the same weight), it is extremely important that the Load be re-developed from below when a 2-diameter bullet is initially used for load development. 2. No, not at that distance. I've used the same exact bullet out to about 400yds and it kills extremely well. 3. Depends on what your definition of "harder" is. The 200gr RN Hornady seems to expand a bit quicker, but they both will work just fine in his rifle on Hogs, Deer and Black Bears. My experience indicates the 200gr SP Hornady is slightly tougher(slower expanding and therefore deeper penetrating) when Impact Velocity is high though and I use it a lot in my 350RemMag.

Yes...... and no! RN's work fine, but if flat trajectory is what your looking for then your looking in the wrong place. Out to 200 yds even a 35 remington will lob those 200 gn RN's adequatley enough to hit the mark, which ironically is where over 90 % of big game is taken. Its true that their larger frontal area will provide a bit of a better initial thump! BUT, once again, the farther you stretch out your shots, the more a spitzer gains on them making that part a wash as well. Load some up and see how they hit the mark at the distances you expect. When used within their effective range there is nothing wrong with a RN. They work!

My shooting buddy just picked up a 358Win Model 70. He wants to use it on an upcoming pig hunt in Central California. Do you think roundnose bullets are a good choice? He's thinking Hornady 200G roundnose. Since anticipated shots are under 200 yards, do you think they will lose too much velocity? Do you think they will hit harder than spitzers? TIA, Jeff

I think rn are a good design, but I would concur with Terry and go heavier. Me thinks the 250 gr @ 2200-2300 fps would be a better match for the 358. If he really wants more trajectory, then an even better choice would be a 225 gr partition or X bullet @ 2500 fps. Either combo will be plenty flat for 200 yd shots. I would consider the added velocity for the 200 gr pill a poor tradeoff.
