| We all would like all of are guns to shoot .5 but as you see a 1.25 or 1.5 inch gun is min of deer out past 300 yards.
You should like your rifle. The right 35 cal bullet at a decent vel. well kill anything you want.
Because I like to tinker with guns I would try and get it to shoot a bit better most likely glass bed it try some differant bullets ect.
But as it is it well hunt for a very long time.
Enjoy it. |

| Well finding plentiful store bought ammo is probably not going to happen with the whelen. But I think you still made a good choice. Get that reloading equipment and you'll be able to get what you want of of that caliber. Look at 225 gr bullets and VihtaVuori N140 powder. The trigger job sould be a great help. Those factory triggers are probably near 5 pounds at times. A very good bedding job may be in order if it still isn't shooting to your expectations. But your 5" groups will put you in the kill zone on any good sized game animal at 300 yards. My experience with hand loading has shown I can reduce my groups by 30 to 50%. Good luck with the new gun. |

You made a wise purchase, i really like those CDL's, the Whelen is a very easy cartridge to load for, theres tons of 30-06 brass that just has to be passed once through a regular 35 Whelen sizing die(tapered expander) and thats it. Of course there is also properly head stamped brass thats easy to get.
I have a BLR in .358 win, and a 35 Whelen barrel for my Savage 110(1 in 14" twist) and am very happy with the accuracy of my Browning so far, 1" and under for the 200gr Hornady sp.
Soon i will install the 110's barrel and she what she can do. I want to shoot heavy for caliber bullets in the 270-280gr range and the 14" twist should stabilize em, good luck with your new thumper. |

| quote: Originally posted by raybass: Went gun shopping a couple of weeks ago and was really looking for a sendero (long story)but came across a rem cdl in 35 whelen and bought that instead. I like this one, only rounds thru it so far are factory 200 gr. corelokts. Groups are three shot 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" and a little over 5" at 300yds(six shots). Trigger job already being done it was pretty stiff so groups should shrink some. I don't handload but really want to get started soon. Can't find any 250 gr. ammo to try. Have to admit I'm impressed with the rifle and caliber can't wait to try it out on game. I hear 35's are good anchors on game. The recoil isn't bad at all with the 200's might order some ammo from nosler till I can get set up to handload. Any thoughts on this setup would be appreciated.
Midwayusa master catalog p208 has remington 35 whelen 200gr & 250gr PSP $22.99/20 |

| I shoot the Federal Premiums with the 225gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws and it really don't get any better for factory loads. They shoot so well that this is the only gun that I don't handload for. I believe I paid around $25 a box about 2 years ago when I bought 3 boxes, which once sighted in will last quite a while. |

| I have the same rifle. I installed a take-off TI stock. This will take from 12-16 oz off the rifle. Mine shoots less than 1" with 225 Nosler BTs and max laods of RL15. If you can find the discontinnued 225 Federal TBBC loads, they will shoot very well. The Remington factory stuff is grossly underloaded. My rifle has a Leupy 2.5x8 VXIII with Talley lightweights. |

| Thanks fella's for the info. I went with the talley's also and have been thinking about doing a scope swap on this rifle I have a VX-I 3X9 on it now but have a VXIII 2.5X8 on another rifle. Swapping scopes from the 308 and 35 whelen would seem more appropriate caliber wise. The ammo I've been getting was at local shops and will be ordering some this week. I like the fact that the corelokts shoot well enough to practice with so till I either get set up to load my own or get some other ammo. I've shot two boxes through it so far and from different stores so I don't think it'll be finiky. Was considering a new stock but if I do that it'll have to wait a while. I want to get started reloading first and I like the stock on it. Plus I'm kinda leary of messing with it. It looks good and shoots well enough that I'm pretty happy as is. I do want to try some partitions, xxx shocks and federals load in it to see how it shoots them. Hopefully I'll make it to colorado this year and get to try it out.
Straight shootin to ya
