A while back I posted a question on .300 Win mag or .300 Wby mag. Thanks for all the feedback. I settled on a new .300 Wby Vanguard.

A new Richards stock for it is on order, and I finally have the rifle and mounted a new Leupold 4-12x on it.

Yesterday I thought lighten the trigger pull so it didn't feel like I was pulling against a 2x4 wall stud. According to my RCBS trigger pull guage, my rifle's factory set trigger broke at just about 1/4" past the 4 1/2 pound mark on my guage.

So, following the Vanguard Owners Manual, I loosened the lock nut on the front trigger adjusting screw and proceeded to back the screw out 1/2 turn at a time, measuring the pull weight each time, until the screw fell out. The pull weight never changed. I also discovered that there wasn't a trigger spring in this assembly, so that makes the trigger adjusting screw worthless.

The Owners Manual states that the trigger cannot be adjusted below approximately 3 pounds "for safety reasons." I guess that's lawyer talk for BS. How safe can a gun be if the trigger pull is set so heavy that you pull the sights off the target before the trigger breaks?

I guess it's another $80-90 into my project for a Timney trigger that works.

At least my Remington 700's and Mauser Mark X's have triggers that can be adjusted down to an acceptable 2 1/2-3 pounds.

Ask around on some of the classifieds.I GAVE a factory Vanguard trigger away just this past summer. Any Howa action triggers will work(S&W,Mossberg, and of course Vanguard). Also try contacting Legacy Arms. Their good people to deal with. GOOD LUCK!!

Oddly enough I have one with a really good trigger out of the box. ( I also replaced one with a Timney).

I have a Howa, which is identical to the VANGUARD. After I did a simple trigger job, I can easily get the pull down to 300 grams and safe!!
I settled it at 700 grams, crisp as breaking glass.

There are a few tricks to this I found on other forums. Send me a PM and I'll inform you.

By the way, when done properly, the HOWA/VANGUARD trigger is sooooo much better than the Timney replacement!!

Hope I didn't give you guys the impression from my post that I was downing Howa triggers! The one I gave away was for someone who had broke the trigger release off up inside the housing. I GAVE it to him because it was GIVEN to me. Having said that though,my main go to rifle has been a S&W I bought new on Sept.17,1983. It's had a good bit of work done to it including replaceing the trigger because the gunsmith just couldn't get the slightest bit of creep out of the original one. I put a trigger shoe on which did help but,as I'm kinda particular, when Timney came out with a replacement I put one on. Put my original one on a friends Mossberg 1500 .270 and he couldn't believe the difference made by a well adjusted trigger. It's been on probably 18 or 20yrs. The Howa actions have been around along time and come a long ways but I believe they still haven't gotten the full respect their due.

Trigger on my Vanguard was fine out of the box. Haven't measured the pull weight, but it's fine for a sporter, very crisp.

Triggers just like taste in women varies muchly.

I am about to pick up a Wby Varmint Spcl in 22/250 and will most likely just order a Basix to get this deal sorted.

Trust me, if Jewell made one for it I'd buy one.

A gun is only as good as it's trigger and the trigger man.

A good smith can take the factory Vanguard trigger down to a crisp 2 1/2 pounds or less. I can't do it, but my smith can.

I finally got my Vanguard trigger down to 2 pounds, but it has too much creep. It shoots much better with the lighter trigger. I'll either get use to the creep or get another trigger, but I love this .257 Wby Mag Vanguard. It is extremely accurate.

My Rant is over!

Thanks, reindeer. I followed (mostly) your PM and my factory trigger is now a crisp 2 1/2 pounds.
