.338 would be my choice. Depending on how you load it, it will duplicate a 375 H&H or a 300 mag.

velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

I am not familiar with the 8x68 cartridge but I have an 8x57 and love it. I first picked up on the 8mm when I read about GI's just rechambering the mausers they brought home to take a -06 case. I think your choice with the Barnes 200 grain should Kick butt and take names in the process. Show it off, post a couple of pictures of it when it is finished please. DW

8mm is still very limited in bullet selection.

Elk at 350 yards?

That's easy :

338 Winchester Magnum
225 TTSX's.

Doesn't get much better than that.

I also read up on it and while I am not overly recoil sensitive, I don't get a kick (no pun intended) out of beating my self up.

So, I have reassessed the issue. I probably will never get to Africa and even if I did I would only be interested in the various antelope. Here in the good old U.S.A. the biggest thing I have hunted is Elk and that will probably continue to be the case.

I would like input on medium bore cartridges that will provide good knock down of a large elk at 350 yard. That's about all the range I feel comfortable with any more. American, British or European are all welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Two cartridge choices I'd recommend. .300 H&H with a 180gr TTSX or a .375 H&H with a 250gr TTSX. Done!!!

I like your first thought, which was the 375 RUM. I had a M 70 rebarreled to it some years back and the only thing I don't care for is it's unique brass. If I were to do it now I'd probably opt for the 375 ruger: no rebated rim, base diameter .532" same as the standard magnum belt. Other than that, the RUM is fine. Loaded with 250 gr Swift A-Frames the velocity is 3000 fps so you get flat trajectory and a decent payload. The recoil is not overly different from other high performance magnums. As a second choice I'd go with a 338 Win Mag with 210 Partitions. I'm not a fan of the all brass bullet- even if the State of California knows that lead causes premature death.

I would keep inmind that you have a "long action", so short magnums being suggested are not what your after...unless you use the long action, long throat seat the bullets out long position, and it works...My long throated, 375 Magazine, 338 win. allows me to seat the long 250 gr. Accbponds and 300 gr. Woodleighs and other long heavy .338 bullets way out yonder, and it will duplicate a 340 Wby in many cases with that extra powder space..

The other option is use any long magnum caliber that suits your fancy and ability to handle the recoil..My choice would probably be a 340 Wby with a long throat to match the magazine. but I base that on recoil and blast, that's about my limit.
