My old notes from 1971 show that I had a gonga load with IMR 4198..45 grains under a 250 grain hard cast Lyman round nose gave 2800 fps!

That sounded pretty darn impressive, so I did a little research on that... according to the IMR load data, that would have yielded around 2300 fps, instead of 2800.. which is a BiG difference! I am sure that his load notes were either misprinted or he can't read his own writing....

But I find most of his writing pretty darn inspirational... I like Mr. Kelly's load data stuff a lot!!!

Rick,
i would expect you can get a little better than 2550 from youf whelen ,Assuming you have a 24 inch barrel. Try RL-15...tj3006

I had a 35 Whelen AI, and sold it, not because I didn't like it.
I would say from experience that the 35 Whelen AI offers little over the standard 35 Whelen, maybe 25 or 50 fps at the most.
So, I suggest a straight 35 Whelen over a 338. And, my take is the 338 does kick harder than the 35 Whelen; I've shot both.

Well having put around 70 rounds thru my Whelen now I will say without a doubt it kicks more reasonably than my Ruger in 338 Winchester did. Could be stock design or the 10 grains less powder being ejected. Recoil is there at the bench but not bad and the rifle is plenty accurate. With its 24 inch barrel and Leupold 4x scope it weighs a bit more than 8 pounds and handles just fine. I am using 250 grain Speer hotcor's in both it and my 358 Winchester. I think I am good for anything in Texas.

I used to own both. I now only own the Whelen. Guess that says it all for me.

I do not have a .35 (although I would like a 358 STA ) I do have a 338WM.
It is Accurate, versatile, mild recoil. It has with a 200Gr round it has a trajectory the same as an 06 with 150 gr bullet.

I would get another 338WM in a NY second.
