I'm pretty sure how this poll will turn out but figured I would see what people think. I'm going on a trophy hog hunt in November. I hope to encounter a big boar. I have 3 rifles that shoot really well. It's in East Texas and I'm told shots are close.

Question:
What would you take?

Choices:
Kimber 84,Zeiss Conq 2.5x8, 257 Rob, 120 Hornady HP
Ruger 77, Zeiss Conq 2.5x8, 338 Fed, 200 Accubonds
CZ 550 FS, VX3 1.5x5 German #4, 9.3x62, 250 Accubond

Having shot several piggies with a .257 Roberts, it will work but it's definitely marginal. Headshots work great, but it's going to run on a body shot.

IMO, the .338 is a much better choice. But you don't mention the third caliber...I wouldn't hesitate to go bigger. I'm taking my .375 H&H to Texas this deer/hog season and I don't think I'll be undergunned!

Robert

I only hunted pigs once but clearly it seemed it was a "30 and over" thing....

Take the .338 federal.....you did say the shots were expected to be close didn't you? Big Grin

I have killed more than a couple hogs with everything from .243 to .45 M/L they die like deer and are not hard to kill.
Shoot them behind the shoulder with any of your rifles and have a sharp knife ready to dress him/her out.

Obviously a trip to the local Gun Shop to do some Trading. tu2

Actually any of them would do. I agree with going with the lightest rifle, where mud and scratches wouldn't get me concerned. Since you mention they will be close, I'd probably take a 357Mag or a 44Mag on the hip with Hard Cast Lead.

And a Drag Stick. Big Grin

I have that same setup with the CZ 9.3, by far my favorite hog rifle. Will knock the snot out of the biggest, ugliest hogs with my 250-gr Barnes TSX handloads. Lots of fun, the rifle is easy to handle and shoot. Place your shot well and it's DRT. Have fun and good luck!!

Well, the hunt is next Tuesday. I've decided to take my 338 Federal. I've put too many hours in that rifle trying to find the right load that shoots well. I need some return on investment.

The 9.3 was just too damn easy. The first load I tried shot great. I'll have to save that one for a Nilgai hunt next year.

I'm taking the Roberts on a deer hunt in late Nov.

Wish me luck! Hopefully I'll have some pics to post late next week.

That seems heavy for a gun that has a catalog weight of 7 pounds. Is it really loaded up to 9lbs?

Too bad - I dont see either the Ruger ultralight, 6.25lb / 20bbl, or compact, 5.75lbs / 16.5bbl, offered in 338.

Yeah, it's a pig but it's pretty. I replaced the stock with one from Accurate Innovations and added some sights. Placed it close to 8lbs sans scope. Mounted a Zeiss conquest which weighs 14 oz. I'm probable going to sell the Zeiss after this trip and get a leupold 3x9 ultralight that is 8.8 oz. Should help lighten it up a little.

I would take my Simson 9.3X62 but taht is only because I do not have a 338 Federal. I voted for the Federal round because it is for a pig hunt & not for moose or even Elk. I would expect multiple opportunities for pigs and the possibility of quick shooting. I fee that the 9.3X62 is just too heavy for quick shooting and fast handling.

My 9,3x62 CZ American tends to be my "go to gun" for piggie expeditions. It has never failed to give me superb performance.

I've had heard stories of simply HUGE piggies in east Texas for which I would consider even the 9,3x62 to be the minimum chambering. Would LOVE to get a whack at tone of those!

The CZ 9,3x62 with American style synthetic stock is the way to go. If I had one like that instead of the FS version it would probably still be in my safe.
With respect to this hunt take either .338 or 9,3 whichever feels better and shoots better with you.
Much like in dance competition pick partner which can make you shine and win.
