If I may be so bold, I think their decision to change the trigger wasn't right.
In that frame of mind, the Montana 1999 is closer to the old M70.

Now I'll await the pile on.

No pile on from me. The model 70 trigger worked just fine for nearly 80 years, I saw no reason to mess with it.

I disagree.....my new M-70 trigger is better than any M-70 trigger I've ever had......and a lot better!

From what I've seen so far is that the only people criticizing the new M-70 are folks that don't own one yet!

I have two of the new Win M70 Fwt DLXs, 270Win and 30-06Spr. I bought the first two as soon as they arrived at my local dealer last November, in order to try the new Winchesters. I have no intent to hunt them (too pretty to beat up) will keep for just range use and as safe queens. Both are 1MOA shooters right out of the box with no load development. Fit, finish, and function are excellent. Never checked the pull weight but the triggers on both of these rifles break clean and crisp. I do have first hand experience with a limited sampling when this subject comes up. Can't attest to the dependability of the new triggers under harsh conditions as I can on the older Win 70 triggers (which were perfection in a hunting trigger IMHO). These new M70s overall seem to me to be very nice rifles and well worth the price. YMMV.

I like my M70 Featherweight deluxe in 270win.

Backed that trigger adjustment screw all the way out and it is clean at 3lbs.

I love this new gun

I was waiting for the Supergrade, then visited the gunshop and looked at the Featherweight Deluxee in 270 WSM and fell head over heals in love. The dealer also told me it might be a years wait for the SG. I have several Model 70 both Pre and Post 64, two of which are Customs, one from the Winchester shop and another from an excellent craftsman, this rifle is the equal of the Customs. I put a 4.5 X 14 Ziess on it and in seven shots got a one inch group, and the next three shots gave me a .5 inch group. I am very pleased to say the least, now I may let my grandsons shoot my Ultimate Shadow in .270 WSM. If you have not shot the new Model 70's, reserve judgement until you can do so. Good shooting.

Bo Rich ----- My rifle has wood comparable to that of my Custom from the old Winchester Custom Shop. I don't know if this is typical or not. At the shop where I bought mine, I looked at three other featherweights that did not have "Deluxe" on the box and their wood was very plain. I looked at one other Deluxe model with the good wood and picked the best of the two. Good shooting.

I got a new Featherweight Deluxe in 3006, it is a beauty. I have always liked the adjustable trigger on the older models, but the new one is set right at about 3-lbs so for me no need to fix it. Very smooth and crisp. I have only shot it a few times but the groups are just over 1 inch, I think a different load will improve the accuracy. Overall I like it!

Thank you for your reply Phurley5. I understand that the Deluxe model has upgraded wood. All other features are the same between the Featherwieght Model, and the Deluxe Featherwieght Model.

phurley5,

How does the 270 wsm feed? How many does it hold down?

The deluxe model also has some gold inlaid script if that's worth anything....It's nice but not worth much IMO!

Tech ----- I now have two .270 WSM's, a .243 WSSM and a 25 WSSM, and have never had a feeding problem. My son and grandsons also hunt with them, only one grandson has mentioned a feeding problem and he would screw up an iron wedge. I can put three in the hole, but usually go with only two, it is just my thing. While hunting I require my grandsons their first year use them as a single shot to teach them accuracy with the first shot. If they miss that first shot they cannot shoot at that animal again. ----- My new Featherweight Deluxe has the gold inscription on it. "Limited Edition" that someday will mean something, if they stop putting it on later rifles. Good shooting.

My dealer told me that both the Stainless All Weather and the Supergrade were supposed to be out after the first of 2009. Now Winchester isn't saying, but the dealer says probably not this year. I was waiting for the Supergrade and Stainless All Weather but decided to take the Featherweight Deluxe because it was so outstanding. After shooting it, I am tickled to death I went ahead. I will probably be temped again when they come out, but may wait for the larger chamberings. Good shooting.

I just picked up a supergrade in 325 wsm. I haven't shot it yet, but plan to get the scope mounted soon. Overall fit, finish, execution, etc., is great. I eally like the rifle so far.... The proof, however, will be in the shooting.

They are great. As long as you want a wood stocked, blued 270 or 30-06.

I am thinking of getting a .308Win Featherweight but is the action a "short" action or a "long" .30/06 length action with a filler to take the shorter .308Win?

Personnaly i can not see how the trigger can be much better because my two, lefies, let off at a crisp 3 pounds. I will have to waite to long fot new winchesters in left hand, so i will continue to get the older ones when i can and be just as happy.

Not trying to start a "caliber war" but why would you buy a M70 in 308 when you can buy one in 30-06?

I had a Super Grade, with a RMEF promotion model decore on it.... chambered in 325 WSM, held in my hands this evening...

belonged to a 'well connected' local guy I know here in town... his son is in my son's Scout Troop...

this is one of 474 made according to him, special production... it had the new trigger etc...

It was definitely a refined very nice rifle...
the trigger was crisp with Zero creep in it...
and the stock was also very nice, although the wood had no fancy pattern to it...

I have two Fwts in 270 WSM and 30-06. They are attractive, showing good fit and finish. They shoot acceptably in the first tests at the range. I'd buy more as they become available.

My '08 is inherently more accurate than the '06's I've owned, so I'd get another.

I appreciate that. I had a Rem 700 in 243 that would 3 shot 1" groups consistently at 200 yards. It just seems to me that a M70 and the 270 / 30-06 calibers seem to go together naturally. The 308, 7x57, 257 Roberts and 243 are all great rounds. Very accurate and less recoil than their 30-06 cased based cousins.

Chuck
