My Kimber Montana shoots this factory load better than anything I've tried. One inch groups at 100 yards. The bullet has performed well on our California pigs with their tough hide. I also hunt well fed mule deer in Utah. Anyone have experience with this bullet on mule deer. How about elk?

Im sure it will work on both Mule deer and elk up to 300 yards give or take 50 yards..I like heavier bullets on elk, but have seen some good results with 150s, especially with monolithics..I have used Barnesx 150 gt FNHPs on elk in a 30-30, and got exit holes on broadside shots at about 150 yards..

I have no first hand experience with that bullet but if you are having great performance on Hogs and Mule Deer then you should use it on Elk, I would have no reservations doing so.
Think of it this way, same weight bullet and speed in a 7 mag or 280 Rem or 280 AI would be deemed excellent Elk medicine, same thing in a 270 or 270 WSM.
My guess is you will have dead Elk, I'm doubtful that you will recover a bullet, monometals penetrate way beyond their relative weight.

I shoot that bullet in my .300 WSM (a Kimber 8400, btw) at about 3150-3200 (per the book, not measured) and it's great. I've killed several pronghorn and two oryx, which are roughly equivalent to cow elk in size and superior to bull elk in tenacity. So far, none of the critters I've shot have stopped a 150 Barnes TTSX and none have required two shots. I would jump at the chance to shoot a mature bull elk with these bullets and never think twice about it.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I was most concerned about expansion on the mule deer but it sounds like will work fine.

I used Barnes Vortex 150 ttsx loads in a .308 in Namibia last year on everything from dik-dik to kudu and could not have been happier. Surprisingly enough that ammo chronographed about 2950 out of the Browning X-bolt I took. Nothing required more than one.

If you be the LB that I know, you've shot enough game to know that if you stick that bullet in the right spot it's going to work, if its getting exit holes in larger Plainsgame it will get exits in elk at least 50% of the time, the rest will stop on the off side skin, and that's good enough for guv-ment work.. Smiler

I've shot the big four, all the major plains game, stand whitetail, CA blacktail, and lots of CA wild pigs but there's something about the Utah mule deer and elk that get's my hands shaking and my head spinning. Guess its buck fever. I want to make damn sure this new Kimber does its job when I stuff it with good shooting ammo. I need all the help I can get! Thanks guys for sharing your wisdom. Happy Saint Patrick's Day.

My only experience on game with a Barnes bullet is in .25 caliber and the older XLC bullet. That was on an Antelope near Price, UT.

Now this past deer season there were two brothers who were hunting in the same area in north central NV for mule deer. They were both using Barnes factory loads in their .308s. one of the guys hit a nice sized Mule deer and it only took one hit in the classic double lung shot. He didn't say if it was the 150gr or the 168gr but either way it passed through and he brought the deer back to camp.

I have friends who have been using factory loaded Barnes bullets when they were loaded by Federal. They have taken many UT mule deer and elk with them.
