I have handled a few and other than the fact that they are heavy they seem pretty nice. Any problems with them? Anyone make a fiberglass stock replacement for that longer Ruger magnum mauser action? We live in the desert and stocks break when they switch from high humidity to the desert.

I had one in .416Rigby which I purchased slightly used (typical..."like new, complete with 20-round box of ammo with two shells fired" ), and enjoyed it for several years, until it cracked the stock behind the tang only a couple of weeks before a trip to Africa. Really put a bad taste into my mouth, despite being a Ruger admirer in general. I might try another one someday, but only in .458Lott. As nice as the gun was, it was far too heavy for a .375 or even a .416. Shot very well, seemed to fit me well (6'2", long arms and neck), fed and ejected smoothly.

I have one in 416 Rigby. Shoots very well. I have read that glass bedding the action and tang prevents the stock spliting problem. I have not done that yet, do not know if I am going to keep this rifle or not. I would rather have a #1.

Thanks guys, I found a couple I like and the price is good. Found a 270 that would make a nice rebored 350 Rigby or 338-06.

Let me know if you end up deciding to sell it and what you want for it. I'll be in New Mexico for a hunt late 2015.

Again Lads, if the tang on a bolt gun touches the stock at the rear it will split. Not a huge stock makers project can be solved carefully with a sharp pocket knife or a bit of sandpaper on the end of a pencil. 470NE Searcy 9.3X74r Johann Springer

I have a RSM in 416 and 375 Both have bed glass bedded and checked to be sure the tang does not touch wood. They both shoot like a dream. Lot of gun for the money.

I have one that started life as a 416 Rigby and was rebored and rechambered to 470 Mbogo. Absolutely love it.

My .416 is an early one with swivel stud in the forearm, never been a problem. 120 full patch rounds with no problems right outa the box. Pulled the action, slicked up the rails, mag well, feed ramp,& floor plate. Knocked off the square edges on the stock, slimmed as much as I could without bothering the checkering, installed a second cross bolt, installed a real recoil pad. Relieved wood from inside stock where appropriate, Epoxy steel bedded the hokie recoil lug iron, then bedded from stem to stern the and re finished. ops, think those are .375H&H in the belt hahah 470NE Searcy 9.3X74r Johann Springer

Some later production Ruger 416's that I've seen have thinner barrels, and must have weighed around 9.5lbs, or maybe 9.25. This seems about right for me with a 416 Rigby. The lightweight versions of original Rigby's were about about 9 to 9.5lbs. Harry Selby's 416 weighs 9.25lbs, but he thinned the stock himself to make it more to his liking. I've not fired the 7.8lb Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger, but I'm guessing I would not care for the recoil. Matt Matt FISH!! Many RSM owners seem to load a bit HOT! I have done both ends, original .416 Rigby and close to .416 Wea---- hahah well you can imagine. In this heavy hunk of iron and wood the higher end is still brutal! Oh Matt, this one took a bottom of the book Shiras Moose in north park 20 years ago. 470NE Searcy 9.3X74r Johann Springer

If you go this route keep us in the loop. That is one of the rounds I want for no other reason than to have one.

You lucky dawg! I've hunted Route, near Gould, for Elk several times with no luck. However, I see a couple of Moose every time. Matt Matt FISH!! My tag was in one of the first seasons offered, some 1,500 entries and I drew 1 of 2 for that area. 470NE Searcy 9.3X74r Johann Springer

I bought an RSM/EXPRESS at same time I bought a CZ550. Both were 416Rigby. I slimmed the stock down on the Ruger and replace the bolt handle with a longer straight one. I kept the CZ550 and used it in Africa to take my last elephant. All my dislikes of the Ruger are esthetic. It shot perfectly and the Circassian stock was nice. I dislike all the flat areas on the stock and dislike the bolt handle and the stock cut they make for it is abysmal. The safety is not sized or shaped to my liking and the trigger guard/bottom metal is a failed exercise at producing a hinged inside trigger guard release model. All in all too many dislikes that could not be rectified. I changed the bolt handle and slimmed the stock but could not resolve a fix for the other problems. MAYBE I could have cut off the guard bow and welded on a Mauser type but could never figure how to correct the safety lever. As I say all are appearance dislikes and do not detract from the accuracy or reliability of the rifle in any way. My feelings are the same about all the other Ruger bolt guns, close but no banana. They are so heavy because they used the same barrel contours for the medium bores as they did the big bores. I think a rebore is perfect but what about a 9,3x62? Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Wowee mama! That would be sweet. An older circassian stocked, integral quarter ribbed Express Ruger in 9.3...hubba hubba.. I can't believe I never thought of that.

Any factory or custom rifle in the real big bores form 458 and up need to be tweaked IMO. I would glass bed one full length, add two real cross bolts, add a second recoil lug under the rear sight or thereabouts. Those are the basics I require. Other niceties are great in some cases. A Safari is expensive so why not go prepared. I have seen too many high dollar custom guns split out over the years to do otherwise Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
